In modern football this has become so important, our lack of a footballing vision has been a big flaw and the reason we struggle in recruitment and have left us behind the likes of City and Liverpool.
For example Wan bissaka before he lost all confidence, he would have his best games in the big games against the top wingers were he excelled at stopping them one v one, exactly the job he was doing at palace were he looked impressive but skills that aren't all so relevant in the majority of games at united. Most games under Ole he played behind Greenwood who would tucked in leaving Wan bissaka with the responsibility to attack the entire right flank like a Dani alves clone.
Same with Pogba when we signed him, there was a lot of hype surrounding him, but how we'll fit his skill set into our play was never considered.
Same goes to Sancho, VDB, Lukaku, and all the others.
I think all players were doing good before coming to united showing that in the right set up they are more than decent, we just bought different pieces to different puzzles hoping they'll form a picture.

The problem isn't with the scouts because I don't think they know in details what they should be after, more a lack of footballing vision coming from the top.
The next manager needs to pick the players who suit his ideas from within and get rid of those who doesn't as well as add the right profile if we're ever going to truly look like a team.
