Just got finished with ‘Never Give In’ about Alex Ferguson & there were a few songs in the documentary & some questions popped up to me.

Who makes up the songs / chants typically? Is there one supporters club that historically has done so? Once a song or chant is determined by whomever, how is it disseminated to the rest of the supporters?

They’re invented in pubs around the stadium by groups of fans on match days as far as I know. Pete Boyle is a particularly vocal vocalist, the Bishop Blaize is one of the main singing pubs near the stadium. Then some catch on in the stadium.

If it was up to the Bishop Blaize we’d be signing One Hag , Two Hag

There's usually a committee that sanctions all chants. It's then spread across the fanbase, usually in pubs, nightclubs and working mens clubs.

Speaking of Pete Boyle, has he slowed down now? Not seen him around in a while and haven't seen many videos of him lately either.

Yeah, me neither. Although I did see him in the crowd near the tunnel in the last year on tv. Looked like he was part of a glazer protest, few scarves and banners near him.
Remember when he used to be on mutv?

Why this forum doesn’t have a sticky of our most popular chants?

I had one for Keano that never got going, but is a brilliant one!

Yeah, and the official website used to do articles on him.

Probably because most of them would break the forum rules!

My old man and his mates used to hitchhike from Northampton to Manchester every home game, often sleeping in hedges on the way back. They’d make up songs in their spare time and photocopy them and drop copies around the ground - I must ask him if any caught on! Back in the sixties it was. He always wore a top hat in the stretty if any old timers remember him!

Said to be a City fan?

Not an answer to the OP and maybe wrong thread but they will never come up with a better song than the one we had in the late 60's.
One wonders how this came about and who was behind it.

We are the great supporters
Man utd is our team
And as you all know into Europe we'll go
In the colours of the team supreme

To the tune: "Off to Dublin in the green"
It wasn't bayonets dazzling in the sun, but the Lawman himself.
I can still recite the whole song but thought another vintage member could maybe fill in.
Sung it all the way from Picadilly to Wembley Central and back 29 May 1968.

Nah, I'm curious about songs in general. This is very cool.
