United blow as Keane faces knee operation
Talismanic captain could be out for three months as Manchester United secure Champions' League place but injury crisis mounts
By Alan Nixon
28 August 2002
Manchester United's relief at securing their place in the Champions' League will be tempered today by the revelation that Roy Keane, their talismanic captain, is facing a knee operation that could keep him out of football for three months. The news is a major blow for Sir Alex Ferguson, whose team qualified for the Champions' League thanks to last night's emphatic victory over Zalaegerszeg at Old Trafford

I just wonder why on Earth he didn't get it sorted after he took that plane back from the WC. I remember a lot of people saying it would turn out better for us because he would sort out his knee...

The report says that he wants (or rather Fergie wants) to secure the CL place first. We are having endless problems now. :(

i haven't seen this story anywhere else...also there aren't any real quotes in that article...i'm usually always skeptical but even more so right now...

This sounds to me like some sort of rumuor flying in the press box at OT last night and all the newspapers picked it up.

no, it's true :(

I wasnt alone in being impressed with our pre-season preperation. But now, only 2 weeks in, we're looking like the walking wounded.

Beckham, back to form, but still not (in his own words) 100% after his foot

Butt out

Fortune out for 6 weeks

Neville still recovering

Rio not 100% and was seen putting ice on his ankle last night (precautionary?)

Keane might need an op

Scholes out for (at least) 2 weeks

Fabien cant dive!

Blanc limping during last nights match but seems ok.

Chadwick still undergoing treatment for face ache

sorry if I missed anyone

AND.... it doesnt look like they'll be any more signings.

UNLESS.... its all a ruse to make Ronaldo feel like we're the spiritual club for his medical needs :(

'He is not having any sort of operation this week,' said Ferguson.

'Maybe there is a problem further down the line but he got through the full 90 minutes tonight and I just deal with facts.'

He knows that a ban from the FA is inevitable after the Haaland revelation from his book and so is waiting to have the op then.

It's a knee operation for sure... this is why it is inevitable to get someone like Di Canio... He'll fit in straight away...

With Keane facing the sidelines, who else but Di Canio to replace him....

I think Di Canio and Veron would be perfect together in the center of midfield.

Who needs to tackle anyway? We payed 30m for Rio, he should play defender and defensive midfielder at the same time.

from skysports.com...

Roy Keane will make Manchester United's trip to Sunderland on Saturday after ruling out an immediate operation on his troublesome knee.

Although the club have again refused to reveal the extent of Keane's injury, manager Sir Alex Ferguson did indicate there was a problem following the Champions League qualifying triumph over Zalegerszeg.

However, having played his way through the opening stages of the campaign, Ferguson will be determined to retain the services of his club skipper, given the fresh injuries sustained by Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

The former has already been ruled out for a fortnight - including England's friendly with Portugal - after jarring his ankle in Tuesday night's European win, while Butt's situation is being monitored.

With doubts over their Champions League qualification now removed, the United purse strings may be released over the next couple of days.

Ferguson has defensive and goalkeeping cover at the top of his shopping list, although he admitted a deal to bring former French Under-21 full-back Julien Escude from Rennes was unlikely to be resurrected after talks broke up without agreement earlier this week.

"The Escude thing looks as though it is finished, which is disappointing," said the United boss.

"We would still like to get a player in and we are pursuing one or two other channels, but we are running out of time. We have options in midfield and attack but we need defenders and we are also assessing the goalkeeping situation."

As soon as Butt's fit after his mystery injury let Keane have his op. I'd rather be without him now than later in the season.

A midfield of:

Giggs ----- Butt --- Veron ---- Beckham

is still stronger than anyone else's.

The worry, of course, would be losing anyone else

BBC Sport report that Keane will be ok to play this weekend and will not have an op. I hope they're right.

It is, but now Scholes is injured I guess postponing was the only option.

These rumours were rumbling on for months at the end of last season. I think there must be a problem, and that it would be best to operate some time, but its not serious enough for him to be unable to play 90 minutes like he did last night.

indeed! reading between the lines: once some of the other injury worries ease up then Keano will have his op.

From ManUtd.com:
Manchester United confirmed this morning that Roy Keane is not having an operation, contrary to misguided newspaper reports which said the skipper was booked in for surgery this week.

Good news!

Reading NOT between any lines, Seba was also supposed to have an operation that will put him out for three months.

Oops, press was totally wrong.

fergie has admitted there's a problem with his knee and a knee is more fragile than an achilles.

We also knew for a long time seba had an achilles problem but he didn't need surgery. And I think both injuries can be serious if not treated right.

we dont know what the problem with his knee is. it cant be that serious (i.e. ligaments) or he wouldnt be able to play at all.
we'll see.....

Given his past surgery it could well just need cleaning out. Not exactly uncommon 3-5 years after surgery on a joint. If that is the case it could be put off for quite sometime as it will only be causing discomfort and minor restriction.

It can't be a serious problem. If it was he would have to have straight away. A knee injury is not something you can play with. My guess is as soon a Butt and Scholes are fit, hopefully before the fisrt CL game he will have it. It will be a big blow Keane has been outstanding in the first 4 games.
The only up side of losing Keane for up to 3 months (apparently) is that i think we will se the best out of Veron. He's struggled to play along side Keane cause they both like the play to go through them, which is not going to happen with Keano on the pitch.
We are starting to look a bit like Medical United. (sorry for The Sun type quote) Why don't we just sign Darren Anderton, Duncan Ferguson and Ronaldo.
I reckon Kenyon's got shares in BUPA

With Keane out, maybe SAF will be forced to play 4-4-2 again because of the lack of cover for the midfielders he isn't going to be able to play 5 every game so although its small comfort maybe it could have a positive side.
Hey if we going to lose our skipper for 3 months you have to find some small crumb of comport

He'll have to do the knee op in any way or another, SAF said so... I also think that he'll be gettin' a ban from FA after the release of the autobiography...

Use your time wisely keano, sorry for being so pessimistic but that's the way I see things coming... ;)
