United After Lopez

SIR Alex Ferguson could make Lazio star Claudio Lopez his number one transfer target.

The Reds boss is keen to sign a world class forward to boost his attacking options and Argentinian international Lopez might be the man to fit the bill.

The 28-year-old is reportedly a target for both United and Premiership rivals Chelsea, but he could plump for the Reds so he could team up with international team-mate Juan Veron.

Lopez is a natural goalscorer, he is also comfortable playing as a withdrawn striker and so would fit into United’s Euro formation.

On the cheap

He is also one of the only top class strikers not to be cup tied in Europe and could be available at a cut price cost.

Lazio would hope to hold out for £25 million for one of their star assets, but their current financial predicament, coupled with their outstanding debt to United, could see him leave for half that amount.

He could even be available on a free transfer come January if Lazio miss his next wage payment. Like the rest of the squad, he has not been paid for five months and another month of non-payment would see him become a free agent

is it true he hasnt played in europe this season?

they are in the uefa cup

From SoccerAge:
Outbound Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti indicated on Monday that the cash-strapped Roman club had settled pending debts with creditors Manchester United and Valencia who were seeking compensation for the transfers of Jaap Stam and Gaizka Mendieta respectively.

"We emphasize there aren't any remaining problems involving unpaid transfers", Cragnotti said. He refused to comment on wages that were still owed to players, though.

Is this true? How did they do that? Have they settled it with players rather than cash?

I dont reckon that it's true, as United would surely have released a statement on the matter.

Would they have to inform the Stock Exchange? Or put it in its balance sheet and accounts to be released later?

I dont know TBH, but I would expect that they would have to inform the Stock Exchange due to the quantity of money involved, as any news of it would probably cause the share price to rise. Surely they would have to inform the SE to avoid insider trading in the shares.

They would have to withdraw legal proceedings for one, and that would have been reported also.

Sounds like its either Cragnotti bullshitting as usual, or he's made an informal agreement that in January we get player(s) to settle the debt.

God knows!

I wonder if RG has heard anything about this?

TBH i can't believe we didn't pick up Crespo.. they still owe us 12m, we would have only had to pay 4-6million..

strange..

btw..Lopez would be a good buy IMO.

he played on the weekend

thats why i asked if he had played in the uefa cup this season

I thought Lopez was past it, but he's been superb this season. Involved directly of something like 66% of Lazio's goals.

I dont think that he is injured, he's played 14 times this year scoring 5 goals.

Apparently he has appeared 3 times in International Cup games for Lazio scoring 1 goal? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Can't deny that he's got good pace and also serves good scorching assists though.

Exactly, where they get the "natural goalscorer" part I'll never know. Probably from Lopez's agent.

But he's still one of my favourite players. Can't really explain why, he just is!

I am not sure about the exact stats but he has been in fine form this season.

Can't see him being at OT though, I don't think he would be available that easily despite the outstanding amount that Lazio owes us.

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson is considering an invitation to sign Argentine striker Claudio Lopez for free or on loan in January. Lopez, 28, joined Lazio for £22m just two years ago

Would be good as a loan sigining, to bolster our striking options till summer. Then we can bring in CISSE!!! (God-willing.)
