P-Nut Writeup

A team built around the greatest performer ever seen at a single euros championship - Platini. He has everything he needs here to thrive and play his natural game.

DEFENCE

A bog standard defence with the only slight variation being Lahms ability to build play from the back right side. The only difference from last round is that Breitner adds his attacking qualities to the LB spot, it was at the Euros that he shot to worldwide fame with his attacking style.

MIDFIELD

Deschamps anchors the midfield, with Vieira replacing Fabregas for this round to provide a solid platform for Platini to shine, here he spearheads the midfield with a license to do as he pleases.

ATTACK

Arshavin and Poborsky take the wing spots, Arshavin playing slightly narrower to allow a Breitner overlap. Poborsky stays wide (utilising his 1 on 1 dribbling) allowing Lahm to underlap and help the midfield. Villa replaces Riva up top as he has a more complete Euros performance being extremely clinical and providing a hard working foil for Platini behind him.

Every single player has featured in the team of the tournament at least once, with a host of winners or runners up across the squad.

GSTQ writeup

Formation - 3-4-1-2
Style of play - Balanced

Setup notes -

1. A proper two way midfield where all 3 midfielders can contribute on and off the ball.
2. Perfect setup for Sammer to shine and contribute in both attack and defense.
3. High energy triangle of Davids/Tigana/Sammer to limit Platini's influence as much as possible.
4. Strong defensive core to make sure no holes are left to exploit when Sammer expresses himself in the attacking phase.
5. Netzer given a meaty singular AM role to pull the strings both in the hole and from deeper areas on the counters. The terrific dribbler and passer he was should make the most of the two ruthless scorers ahead of him.
6. No better wingbacks than Brehma and Kaltz for a 3-5-2 in the draft's theme and to make the best use out of the heading abilities of the front 2.
7. A stellar 3 CB partnership that complement each other and the setup really well.
8. And finally, a front two that can be ruthless scoring any kind of goals with the supply available here from all over the pitch

I know it's just an optics thing but that massive gap between attack and midfield on @P-Nut formation graphic is hurting my eyes.

Scrappys graphic doesn't show for me.

Yeah no way to change it unfortunately, I did tried sharemytactics, but it's still not working for me.

Just to address the midfield in case anyone does see it as too defensive, Vieira is perfect in addressing the concerns from the previous rounds, adding defensive solidity whilst bridging the gap to Platini, and allowing him a bit more freedom rather than being the sole person occupying the opposition midfielders.

Think he means graphically only.

Functionally, dont think anyone would disagree that it is as good a midfield 3 as it gets.

Yeah thought as much, just wanted to make sure as the graphic occasionally throws people off

Need to think about this more but Netzer at 10 and the lack of a wide forward/inverted winger minimises Platini's central passing options.

Everything else in the sides look really clean.

Arshavin is an inverted winger if you look at his euros performances, it's one of the main reasons I wanted Poborsky in order to stretch the pitch on one side.

Do you have any vids? I always remember him as a wide playmaker, more like Zidane

There's this extended highlights video from 08, although it is highlights of the full game rather than specifically Arshavin, you can see the positions he looks to receive the ball in and how often he ends up central.

And again, not an all touches video, but another game from the same tournament to show it isn't a 1 off and it's how he played throughout the tournament.

Thanks for that. Will take a look when I can.

@P-Nut what are Boateng's Euro credentials?

2016 run to the semi finals they only conceded 3 goals all tournament (1 of which was a pen in the semi), Team of the tournament and started every game.

One of Ronaldo's best games at the Euros

1. Assists the first goal for Nani after Portugal being 0-1 down making it 1-1
2. Scores the second portugal goal with a sexy back heel after being 1-2 down making it 2-2
3. Scores the equalizer with a typical CR header when the team was down 2-3 making it 3-3

If Hungary had won this game, Portugal would have been eliminated from Euro 2016, let alone winning it.
