Enjoyed the concept of this draft and Each player I’ve chosen may not be the best but I’ve mainly tried to chose players that have great memories for me or may have just a memorable moment.
I’ve gone for a 442 (surprise) in a way that England played ‘96
Davor suker upfront was a quality striker aswell as having a quality tournament in ‘96, should work well with sheringham just off him who also had a cracking tournament in ‘96 motm against Holland and That fake shot pass to shearer against them could be replicated here with suker.
Poborsky had a couple of motm in ‘96, to me then he was a wtf is this guy, also had motm in the final which they lost, hard working and lightning for the right wing.
The other wing is nedved, also a had a motm in ‘’00 against Holland, and again in ‘04 against Holland, can run the wing or come inside if needed.
Gazza, Gazza in ‘96 is iconic not much needs to be said Colin hendry.
He needed his Paul Ince so struggled here but went with makelele, not as iconic as some in the team but did have a motm in ‘08.
Two centre backs, one had to be Greek, what euros team would be complete without a Greek centre back from ‘04 and carvalho has the more composed, also a motm in 04 in the 2-2 draw against England.
Struggled with full backs and even if Pearce iconic moment to me was after a penalty, it’s a euros memory so he had to go in.
Petrescu, shame he didn’t dye his hair for ‘96 and not the World Cup but the memory is there and he was a decent player.
And then barthez, bad rep these days but still a euros winner and a quality keeper, also remember him saving a beckham penalty which was a fantastic save
Skizzo Writeup/tactics
Peter Schmeichel - Team of the tournament and outstanding performances, including a penalty save against Marco van Basten in the semi finals to lead the team to the final and the trophy.
Berry van Aerle - An ever present and solid performer when the Dutch won in 1988
Marcel Desailly - Team of the Tournament when the French won in 2000
Murtaz Khurtsilava - Team of the Tournament as he finished with a runner up medal in 1972
Jordi Alba - Team of the Tournament as Spain were crowned champions in 2012
Andrea Pirlo - Team of the Tournament, and one of the greatest individual performances against England, as Italy finished runners up in 2012
Marco Tardelli - Team of the Tournament in 1980
Paul Ince - The midfield ball winner of the dazzling England team at Euro 96
Uli Hoeness - Team of the Tournament as Germany won in 1972
Gareth Bale - Three goals in the finals as he led Wales to a semi final finish
Gerd Muller - Top Scorer, Team of the Tournament, Champion in 1972
Strong pedigree of players who all performed to high levels, and many of which ended as Champions. The idea is to build around Pirlo, with a strong defense marshaled by Schmeichel, and with two hard working ball winners to create space and recycle possession. The one issue Pirlo had was finding diagonal runners in the Italy team, but here we have mobile, pacy wide players who would love to get on the end of balls over the top or in to feet to dribble and beat their man…and the prolific Muller to look to get on the end of their service.
