Player Profiles:

Cristiano Ronaldo
- Golden Boot (2020 5 Goals & 1 assist) | Team of the Tournament (2008, 2012, 2016)
Patrick Kluivert - Golden Boot (2000 5 goals) | Team of the Tournament (2000)
.
David Silva - Team of the Tournament (2012)
Thomas Hassler - Team of the Tournament (1992)
Herbert Wimmer - Team of the Tournament (1972)
Xabi Alonso - Team of the Tournament (2012)
.
Han Peter Briegel - Team of the Tournament (1980)
Gaetano Scirea - Team of the Tournament (1980)
Albert Shesternyov - Team of the Tournament (1968)
Revaz Dzodzuashvili - Team of the Tournament (1972)
.
Petr Cech - Team of the Tournament (2004)

Tactics:

Stylistically it is a narrow 4-4-2 or a 4-2-2-2 with more emphasis on midfield in/around the box rather than typical wing play.

Team is built on a solid centre-back due of Scirea and Shesternyov with competent fullbacks in Briegel and Dzo. Briegel will deliver his typical energitic performance at both ends. Dzo was more of a solid defensive fullback but will provide some attacking contribution as possible.

Wimmer's partnership with Alonso will not be too dissimilar to his Team of the Tournament winning performance with Netzer. Alonso is the tactical mastermind and game manager from the middle. They are flanked by two versatile wide/midfielders in Silva and Hassler. Both are comfortable drifting wide and through the middle making this a hard to defend formation.

Kluivert is the perfect facilitator for Cristiano. Tall, strong, good in air, able to occupy defenders and having a NT/Euro pedigree that is way better his club profile. A bit reminiscent of his partnership with Rivaldo. And finally Cristiano who will have a way better quality of talent that he had with Portugal to score at will.

P-Nut writeup/tactics

A team built around the greatest performer ever seen at a single euros championship - Platini. He has everything he needs here to thrive and play his natural game.

DEFENCE

A bog standard defence with the only slight variation being Lahms ability to build play from the back right side.

MIDFIELD

Deschamps anchors the midfield, with Fabregas taking on play making duties and travelling through the lines with the ball. Platini spearheads the midfield with a license to do as he pleases.

ATTACK

Arshavin and Maniche take the wing spots, Arshavin playing slightly narrower to allow a Coentrao overlap. Maniche stays wide allowing Lahm to underlap and help the midfield. Riva plays as a focal point for the attack feeding on the through balls of Arshavin and Platini, with the crosses of Maniche adding a different threat.

Every single player has featured in the team of the tournament at least once, with a host of winners or runners up across the squad.

I think I have an edge in player quality all through.

- Two Golden Boot winners (5 goals each) leading the line.
- A stronger defensive line led by peak Scirea (who would go on to win the WC 2 years later too)
- More robust midfield with blend of workrate and creativity.
- My version of a perfect supporting cast to Cristiano, the all time goal record holder at Euro's.

The best defender on the park is Pepe. Pretty much every euros he comes out with a top level performance, even this tournament he probably makes team of the tournament.

I feel like the midfield has a top mix, Cesc knits Deschamps and Platini together in the 8 spot. He was dynamite with the way he travelled with the ball and opened the game up.

EAP how are you dealing with Platini? Xabi Alonso was quite notorious for losing runners from midfield and he's up against probably the best ever for these types of runs.

It falls mostly to Iron Lung Wimmer who would cover Platini. He'd have lots of help from both Silva and Hassler who will pit up a good shift defensively when off the ball.

The bigger question is how would Deschamps/Fabregas handle Silva and Hassler. Both of them were fairly slow and static and depends on positioning rather than pace. Here with two midfielder moving in and out, that will not work. Both Silva and Hassler will exploit that lack of mobility and work between the lines to feed the attack.

To be honest i don't know much about Wimmer.

Good point about Cesc though, i don't think he played central midfield for Spain at the Euros, more false 9/AM. Maybe @P-Nut can clarify.

Glad to see Wimmer playing a prominent role in a draft, he looked quite spectacular in the games I've seen. Among the fastest players I know, really good dribbler (no joke), smart link-up player, tireless runner & worker. Often attacks as a winger (at least from what I've seen for Germany), which gives Reus and Chislenko lots of opportunity to roam and move inside. Can be a bit rash and chaotic in his movement, but that also makes him unpredictable - Sousa can balance him out when needed.

Will look out to catch the next game, at least.

That in addition to Wimmer who was nicknamed Iron Lung for his boundless energy reserves and his unmatched ability to be an ubiquitous presence all over the pitch. His intelligent gameplay tends to be underrated given that, not only was he required to function as a defensive player in midfield, he was also required to provide plenty of movement on the ball, constantly stretching play and provide runs in a supporting manner. All that in addition to being well versed in the defensive art of covering in a fluid total footballing side. I'd upload a gif or two to highlight his rather unique gameplay and also his brilliant dribbling and ball-carrying ability. Wimmer here shouldn't just be judged on his individual ability alone and he was an excellent individual, but on what he brings to the side as a whole. In fact I even passed up on the best pure holding midfielder in the draft to get Wimmer, so it wasn't just a case of me trying to reunite Netzer with Wimmer and tbh, the only player that I'd have above him in this set-up is Haan.

Seen as how Edgar isn't playing with wingers and is instead expecting Silva and Hassler to add to the midfield battle, that allows the defence to narrow and Lahm to help out in midfield at times.

Fabregas also played deeper at his first euros in 08 (he was nominated TOTM), it was 2012 when he played the false 9 role.

Not at all. Both Silva and Hassler have operated as wingers, so the formation is anything but narrow.

I feel they are best placed to attack from the edge of the box (where your own DMs impact will be less) and feed the two strikers. When they drift out wide (esp Silva with Briegel behind), it'll overload your defense.

P-Nut drafted very well here and can't see past his team. I think Arshavin and Maniche were really clever picks for the Euros theme. Plus, he has Portugal's most important player in their Euros win.

I think that contradicts your OP

Any comments on the build?

Don't rate Cristiano or the build around him?
Build is good. Nice use of Hassler (who was great in 92) and Silva. Central defensive partnership is great.

Hard to rate Ronaldo. Always found his tournament performances erratic, blowing hot and cold.

I liked it. I did wonder if Kluivert was the best fit for CR7 but he wasn't greedy from memory and had good link up play so I could see that working well. I also like a DLP and B2B combo although I can see the Xabi defensive concerns.

In isolation I like Edgar's team better, however I'm not really sure of Cristiano, Dzh, Cech and Shesternyov credentials in Euro's draft. I mean Cristiano's I don't rate particularly high. He has the volume but never the quality.

On P-nut, tidy looking team with good outings at the EURO's, the only issue I have is the aforementioned Maniche. He doesn't belong there(on the wing).
