GSTQ Writeup/tactics

Tactics -

1. The team is built to get the best out of the front 2 - Shearer and Ronaldo
2. Shearer in his prime was a beast - pace, shooting, heading, quality, quantity, he had it all. Ronaldo of course needs no reminder.
3. The 2 wingbacks are absolute goat class when it comes to crossing ability among full backs.
4. The midfield 3 is almost as ideal as it gets for a 3-5-2 both on and off the ball.

Thoughts on opposition - I like the front 6 but don't like the defense at all

1. Krol and Amoros dont have good Euro credentials.
2. Krol featured in the 1976 and 1980 Euros and appeared in 5 games in total. Out of these 5, only 1 game he featured as a LB and the rest 4 were from sweeper position.
3. Even keeping the positions aside, in 1976, Netherlands had a terrible showing losing 3-1 in the semifinal game and winning 3-2 in the 3rd place match.
4. In the 1980 Euros where he played all games as a sweeper, Netherlands couldn't even qualify out of the group stage with 1W, 1L and 1 D in 3 games, conceding 4 goals in 3 games.
5. Amoros had little to no contribution in the 1984 Euros starting only in 1 group stage game (where he played as LB) and in no knockout games.
6. In the 1992 Euros where Amoros was the France captain, France crashed out in the group stages losing 1 game and drawing 2 with no wins.
7. I also am not a fan of any combination of Baresi/Carvalho/Van Dijk. The profile of the CB alongside all 3 of them should be different IMO, especially while dealing with a strike force of CR and Shearer

initially wanted to vote hman as i dont rate ronaldo at euro stage at all but scrappy pulled a masterstroke with the euro credentials of the opposition so now im waiting for response

Not sure how can you play 3-5-2 without holder. Suarez maybe, but not ideal imo. Don't bark scrappy, am usually not feeling it with 3-5-2

That stuff on Amoros and Krol's credentials swung it for me. And I don't rally recall Totti and KDB doing much in euros. Plus I really like those wing backs crossing into CR and Shearer.

Conceding defeat. I've just been drafting for fun in this draft and basically picked a team I like.

Good luck in the next round, GSTQ. I think positioning Ondrus a little ahead of the other two CBs like you did the previous round made the formation graphic a bit better, otherwise that midfield looks too attack minded for me.

Noted. Will see how the reinforcements pan out. Cheers

On Ronaldo, I think he is looked through additional lenses and goat expectations as compared to others. We should also account for the quality of his teammates. His pure numbers across the editions should be a testament for what can deliver with a quality team. Don't rate at all is a stretch IMO but to each his own.

The midfield can use an additional defensive presence against the likes of Platini and Zidane, won't disagree with that. Don't mind an aggressive midfield going forward with 5 quality defenders in general.

As I said, more with me and 3-5-2. Also, I realized I become almost obsessed with holder. Think it is the most importanr part of the team especially if you are going 4-3-3 but even in other formations. Rare breed but so vital. For example, Carrick could easily be part of most teams here.

Now am blabbering. Great team otherwise

zero goat expectations as i dont see him as one, its just that i was never impressed with his performances for portugal at the big tournament...the best i saw him play is probably 04 and even that was nothing special really. He got his numbers up, has his records and fair play, but IMO he never really had a great tourno and its not he is playing for wales, portugal from 04 until now has a strong pool of players.

For the old four team tournaments era, which was always a stupid setup that should have been 8 from the start, I wonder if the quarter-finals shouldn't really be seen as de facto part of the tournament as well?. If only because that way you get a more reasonable amount of high-stakes games to assess players from that era. From reading about them, it seems that was basically the way they were treated at the time anyway, at least by the 68 edition...W.Germany vs England '72 is seen as their most important game of that tournament by many due to proving they could be consistently better than pre-meme era England, Italy vs Bulgaria '68, Soviet Union vs Hungary '68 and Czechoslovakia '76, Netherlands vs Belgium '76 and others were all major high pressure ties.

It is amazing how every post of yours is nail in the head.

Don't know about that, Jim. I've got it wrong plenty of times.

When Haaland was starting to get lots of hype during that RB Salzburg season, and had scored a few CL goals, a friend asked me to check out some games, see what I thought...

So I watch this big clunky Norwegian Log scoring a bunch of decent, but mostly unspectacular box goals in the Austrian league and just don't see a lot there, especially for current top-level trends. I tell him tbh I think he'll be lucky to end up as good as Aleksandr Sobolev, a big Russian Log that was emerging at the exact same time scoring 10 in 12 for Krylia Sovetov Samara (including some genuinely great ones) and getting some domestic attention. Cue Haaland never stopping scoring and going straight to the top while Sobolev quickly settles into inconsistent wooden mediocrity. fecker then tells me he's lost all respect for my football knowledge, but fair enough maybe I just don't have the eye for a number 9.
