Yeah, and many of the U21's have not been playing for a while.

Possible that Manchester Senior cup or Lancashire senior cup games be scheduled in this gap ? We have one due in each with City and Oldham respectively.

Think it's normally 5 quid at the U21's but been a while since I went

Team: Amos. Veseli. Vermijl. Thorpe. Fornasier. Ekangamene. Cole. Tunnicliffe. Powell. Januzaj. Lingard.

subs: Lawrence. Sutherland. James. Blackett. Hendrie

Bad hit for Vermijl there. Cut on top of the head.

What is it with youth players and fantastic names? Donald Love, Nortey Nortei and Beavis Mugabe?

Good move that. Good pass by Januzaj and good run and backheel by Veseli.

I think Lingard should have come wider there.

Does Januzaj ever have a bad game?

Good play by Januzaj there. Powell missed it.

We're really playing some fantastic stuff.

Won 1-0 in the end.

Good performance overall though. Deserved to win by more if anything.

Januzaj, Lingard were both lively and probably the best 2 players. Cole was better today playing central too.

The 2 midfielders were decent but lacked creativity at times. Powell was better in the first half but looked disinterested at times.

U21s: United 1 Saints 0
Jesse Lingard scored the only goal of the game as United's Under-21s earned a fully-merited 1-0 success against Southampton.

Warren Joyce's side were the dominant force throughout but only managed a solitary strike, netted at the start of the second half. Ben Amos remained untroubled for the full 90 minutes, until coming to clutch a cross in comanding fashion in stoppage time, as the Reds deserved to win by a greater margin.

The victory against the fourth-placed Saints takes United above Liverpool into second spot in the table with runaway leaders Tottenham the next opponents on Monday at Salford City Stadium.

Play was held up early on following a nasty clash of heads that led to both Marnick Vermijl and Calum Chambers being substituted. Vermijl needed four stitches, while Chambers required six, and the Belgian's replacement Reece James soon had an impact.

The left-back's excellent low cross was met by Lingard's stabbed shot and the ball hit the outside of the post to deny the Reds a well-worked opener. Nick Powell managed to run past keeper Cody Cropper but his pass was intercepted by skipper Jack Stephens and the teenager then hammered a deflected shot wide from Frederic Veseli's clever backheel.

Just past the half-hour mark, Ryan Tunnicliffe spurned a clear opening when blasting over the bar. The tenacious midfielder, who sent an early overhead kick wide, could not keep his effort down after Tom Thorpe headed an Adnan Januzaj corner towards goal.

Eight minutes later, a lovely turn of pace from Januzaj saw his cross fly across goal with Powell unable to convert with Cropper getting a crucial touch. Januzaj continued to give Matt Young a testing time in an orthodox right-wing role while the

final attempt of the half came when Lingard forced a straightforward stop out of Cropper.

It took only 19 seconds after the restart for a purposeful United to take the lead in stunning fashion. Fed by James, Lingard was able to burst forward to despatch a sweet low finish past Cropper's left hand and into the far corner of the net.

The Saints were rocked and keeper Cropper survived a nervous moment when his clearance struck Januzaj but he caught the ball safely enough as it looped in the air. Although Michele Fornasier had to make a vital clearance to blot out an Omar Rowe cross at the near post, the Reds continued to press.

The energetic Charni Ekangamene ferried the ball to Januzaj, who forced a sprawling save out of Cropper and a second goal seemed certain when a Januzaj corner was flicked on by Powell to Thorpe but the captain's powerful header was blocked on the line by Corby Moore.

United were able to create chances almost at will but Veseli's drive cleared the bar, as did another Tunnicliffe effort after intelligent approach work by Januzaj and raiding right-back Veseli. Powell provided a couple of late shots, to no avail, while Januzaj's exciting dribbles helped keep the crowd warm on an increasingly cold evening in Altrincham.

United: Amos; Veseli, Thorpe, Fornasier, Vermijl (James 11); Lingard, Ekangamene, Tunnicliffe, Cole, Januzaj; Powell. Subs not used: Lawrence, Sutherland, Blackett, Hendrie
