U21s: Forest Green Rovers vs United

I like the fact that the U21’s are being given more and more experiences playing against professional, adult, lower league sides in competitive matches. Playing games in grounds with patriotic fans with a bit of an edge can only be a good thing for our talented youngsters. Also negates the need to send so many kids out on loan to the lower leagues.

In theory I agree. But most clubs don’t play their experienced adult professionals in the games. And fans of most clubs don’t care enough about these competitions either.

And it definitely doesn’t negate the need for loans. It’s very different to fight for promotion/against relegation, effectively playing for people’s jobs, week in week out down the lower leagues compared to participating and playing a couple of matches in these relatively random cups without a great upside for the ”adults”.

Assuming Amass, Wheatley and Collyer are away on international duties?

Amass is with the England U18 squad, Collyer U20. Wheatley has withdrawn from the U19 squad due to an injury, as has Jack Fletcher from the U18s.

Cheers. Missed those injuries, hopefully nothing serious and just one of those "injuries" players get right before international break. ;)

This camera being slightly towards the left side of the pitch is triggering me.

Just noticed that the players aren't wearing their first-team numbers like they do in the EFL Trophy. Anybody know why?

Now that is a good counter - Sharpe equalizes. Picks up the ball inside his own half- sends Ennis clear down the right - he hammers a low cross in that Sharpe puts in the back of the net from 5 yards out

2-1 Ennis-...low cross from Ogunneye. Once again we find space down the right and Ogunneye cuts it back to Ennis who hammers it into the roof of the net

We've done well since going down. Nice response from the lads.

2-2 ... United fail to clear and a Forest Green player with a neatly taken half-volley

Ahh FFS.Concede so soon after we take a lead.

We struggle with their physical presence up front....if we keep the ball on the ground we are much better

Should have been a goal for United. The goalie loses control of the ball with Sharpe in his back...goes down as Sharpe nicks the ball to score. Really soft

Getting a bit fed up with this ref. Seems to be letting a lot of 'lower league' battles go in midfield, then as soon as there's the slightest touch from us when we attack, even when there isn't a touch, he becomes a whistle happy ref quick to penalise us.

Entertaining first half.

Usual stuff from the U21's really - look OK going forward, pretty poor defensively. Considering a lot of options aren't available due to internationals / injuries / loans, then a decent enough performance.

Believe that's 5G + 2A for Ennis this season so far.
I'd like to see more of him on the left, he is much more limited on the right-hand side but Sam Mather is being given priority currently.

Isaak Hughes is a player we should look at - looks really talented

3-2 Musa - good counter. Williams with a nice raid down the left - and the defender completely misses his low cross-field ball...Musa places it past the keeper

Thought he'd messed that up at first but did really well to use the outside run to create space for himself.

Enjoyable match. Deserved win. After a slow start we were increasingly the better team, and they rarely threatened a goal in the 2nd half.

Good performance that, getting good exposure to senior football in 2 competitions now
