I never understood the hype. Granted, The Joshua Tree was a quality album, but I never could fathom how they became the biggest rock band in the world. Anyone else?

I think its something to do with the hundreds of millions of albums they have sold & amazing live performances - spanning over decades.
I dont listen to their stuff, and its been a while for me since they last done anything that I would spend money on, but still a great band.
International recognition is a weird thing, I bet Romanian's wonder how the Cheeky Girls are so well liked in the UK.

For a while you could argue that they were they only real bog standard stadium rock band in the world. Great in the 80's and then went a bit shit, but it was middle of the road stadium rock shit, so people loved it. These days Keane, Coldplay, Kings of leon, Snow Patrol are all peddling the same kind of middle of the road pish

I love U2 and in my opinion they are the best band in the world and at the moment the best live band in the world also. And they have being doing it for years. It seems to me that you either love them or hate them.
Bono's attitude pisses me off, but they do make catchy tunes.

I liked some of their 80's stuff and Achtung Baby. They have had some good singles over the last few years but no solid albums (in my opinion anyway)

Secondly, the thing that annoys me is that they produce some of the most simple songs (along with those other bands) that dont offend and you can tap your fingers to without listening properly. But when you break it down, it could have been formed by ducks locked in a room with instruments.
The Edge is a good example. That guy has his own lorry for his effects, all he does is play a fecking D chord!
Fair enough, it sounds pretty big and at the end of the day, if thats all you are looking for in music, then great. Its fine. It really is. The annoying thing is when people say
"aaah this is the best song eva!!!" and it sells 3000million records.

Theres quite a few bands who can put on show as good as U2 and actually have the music to back it up. Muse, Primus, RATM, Arcade Fire?

Didn't say they play the same kind of music, but imo they're similair in that its just inoffensive and middle of the road. They just aren't very interesting.
Maybe there last 2 albums are a bit more middle of the road but there 1st 2 albums are excellent.

It's shit, that's what it is. I like them, one of my favorite band from childhood but that song is rubbish.
