U18s: Wolves 1 United 2
Manchester United’s Under-18s recorded a fine 2-1 win over Wolves on Saturday thanks to goals from Andreas Pereira and James Wilson at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground.
The victory puts Paul McGuinness’ side back on track in the Barclays U18 Premier League following a run of three consecutive defeats and provides a much-welcomed confidence boost ahead of Thursday’s pivotal FA Youth Cup fourth round tie with Leicester City.
The match started at a competitive pace and the Reds took the lead after just 14 minutes when Pereira rounded the Wanderers goalkeeper to finish with aplomb, despite the efforts of a nearby defender who unsuccessfully tried to clear the ball off the line.
Moments later, United were awarded a penalty but the chance to double the advantage was missed by Wilson, whose straight-laced penalty was well-saved by the home glovesman. Disappointingly, the youngster also blazed the rebound over the crossbar.
Wolves stepped up a gear after the break, though it was the Reds who were more clinical in front of goal and Wilson soon made amends for his spot-kick woes by outmuscling a defender, dribbling past the keeper and skilfully slotting home.
With the clock ticking on, Pereira then hit the post before the Wolves netted a fine riposte on the counter attack, prompting a slightly frantic finale in which the gallant hosts tried to salvage a point. Thankfully, United held on to record an excellent win.
United: J Pereira; Riley, McConnell, Ioannou, Barber; Harrop, Janko, Willock, Mitchell (Goss 56); A Pereira, Wilson.
