U18s: United 2 Sheff Wed 0
United's Academy side notched a second win in a week with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Carrington on Saturday.
Goals from Magnus Eikrem and Cameron Stewart gave the Reds the points, while Wednesday goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell kept the scoreline respectable with a number of good stops.
But O'Donnell would have been disappointed with his role in United's ninth-minute opener. Norwegian youngster Magnus Eikrem struck a free-kick from the edge of the area that shouldn't have posed too many problems for the Owls stopper. But O'Donnell took too long to get across to his right and the ball slipped through his grasp.
There was nothing O'Donnell could do about the Reds' second. Cameron Stewart bamboozled the Wednesday defence with a number of stepovers before lashing the ball from 25 yards into the top corner. It was a spectacular strike and one the visitors never really recovered from.
Indeed, United showed plenty of attacking promise and forced O'Donnell into a number of fine saves during the second half. In contrast, Ben Amos had few scares in the Reds' goal.
"It could have been more than two but [Academy coach] Paul McGuinness will look at the scoreline and be really encouraged by it," former United legend Arthur Albiston said during commentary on MUTV.
"There were a number of really good performances all over the field. United always looked a goal threat. The Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper pulled off some inspired saves in the second half but the general play was excellent."
The win leaves the Academy team with six points from its first four games, while Wednesday have yet to register any points. United travel to Barnsley next Saturday.
