1-0 down at the moment. Not really in the match yet according to twitter

Posted this elsewhere but may as well put it here as well:

Did really well second half after a poor first 45 today. Did look like there were a few jaded guys out there after midweek - we had more guys starting who'd featured in the Youth League, plus a tough game and long trip to Donetsk is going to take a bit more out of players than a home game that was an absolute stroll. Really stepped up after the break though, Harrop/Willock/Goss much improved and Pereira got into a bit more (generally had a pretty poor game though). Switching Mitchell to the right late on after Pereira got injured and was replaced by McTominay was key - he won the pen from a run down that flank (initially tried to shoot/cross, it hit the defender, they both went for it and Demi toe-poked it past him before being sent sprawling, definite pen) and then nearly won it late on cutting inside from the right, beating a couple of guys and curling a shot that hit the post with the keeper absolutely rooted. Draw was about right though.

Liked McTominay's little cameo at the end - got stuck in, played a couple of good passes and showed intelligence/maturity when trying to get his teammates organised and concentrating late on.

Thanks for the updates, looking to see Andreas Pereira step up this year, excited about the youth CL, great experience for the lads to be mixing with the 1st team on the trips, you can see it means a lot to them in the games, it is probably bigger now than the FA youth cup which was traditionally the most prestigious competition we were involved in.

U18: Man City 1 United 1

Manchester United's Under 18s escaped a dose of derby-day blues on Saturday, thanks to Joshua Harrop’s goal from the penalty spot with less than two minutes of the normal 90 remaining.
The hosts Manchester City enjoyed more of the possession and territorial domination, but Paul McGuinness’s side crucially kept going to snatch victory away from the neighbours in the nick of time.
It was a beautifully mild and pleasant morning at City’s Platt Lane training complex, which is situated barely five minutes’ walk from where the Blues used to be based at Maine Road. The favourable weather had prompted a decent number of supporters to attend the fixture which, not surprisingly, always serves up an interesting, entertaining and keenly-fought contest.

There was nothing to choose between the sides in the opening stages as they both took a few minutes to size up the opposition. The first chance of the morning fell to United’s Sean Goss, but his shot spun away well wide of its intended destination. Then, less than sixty seconds later, City moved into the lead with a goal from striker Daniel Lema after United’s defence had failed to deal with a cross from the left.
The Reds almost made an immediate reply when Ashley Fletcher burst into the City area, but his shot, from a good position, flew over the crossbar. Blues’ keeper Billy O’Brien made a fine save to deny Andreas Pereira and then Fletcher had the ball in the net only to find that the assistant referee’s flag, for offside, was already fluttering.

United were given a let-off ten minutes before the break when the other referee’s assistant flagged for a penalty having spotted an incident in the area, but the referee would have none of it and he instantly overruled. The game was held up for about five minutes just before half-time to allow City full-back Pablo Maffeo to receive treatment. He was eventually taken from the field by the stretcher team.
The early moments of the second half were played out to the bizarre backdrop of a religious procession, complete with piped music and a pipe-band, passing by in the adjacent Platt Fields Park.

United went close to grabbing an equaliser on the hour when Goss got above the City defence, but his header struck the foot of the post. The game continued to flow from end to end, but neither side could put the finishing touch to their fine approach play.

City were finishing the game the stronger of the two teams, but with two minutes to go United snatched a late goal and a share of the rewards. Demetri Mitchell weaved his way into the Blues area where he was tripped by defender Jose Angelino. The referee pointed straight to the spot and Josh Harrop stepped forward to crack an unstoppable shot past O’Brien.

Remarkably, United almost snatched a winner in added time when Mitchell’s shot thumped against the post. But the Reds can still feel pleased to have forced a draw, the team's first of the season after two defeats and six straight wins inbetween.

United: J Pereira; Evans, McConnell, Ioannou, Barber; Harrop, Willock (Redmond 64), Goss, Mitchell; A Pereira (McTominay 83), Fletcher. Subs not used: Borthwick-Jackson, Henderson.
