United's youngsters will attempt to land the trophy for 19th time in Zurich come May.

8/01/2013 16:10, Report by Adam Marshall

United will be entering a team in this year's Blue Stars FIFA Youth Cup, with 2013 marking the 75th anniversary of the prestigious tournament.

Paul McGuinness' side will be competing on 8 May and 9 May in Zurich with the Swiss trip certain to provide more invaluable experience for the Reds' teenagers.

The competition is for players born in 1993 or later although only a maximum of five in the squad can be born after 1995. FC Zurich beat Grasshopper Club in all-Swiss final in 2012 while United have lifted the trophy 18 times, the last triumph coming in 2005.

Meanwhile, the Academy side's second scheduled fixture in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League Elite Group on Saturday has been called off.

The Reds were due to entertain Everton's youngsters at Carrington but the freezing temperatures have led to an early postponement.

We've won it 18 times out of 75 competitions? That's a bit of an impressive record, isn't it?

Incidentally, I had a look at it's history, as I thought it probably wouldn't have been 75 competitions in full. I was wrong - apparently it started during WW2, and was played every year during it. How did that work?

Rossi dominated this IIRC ? We should have a good team this year, if they are not promoted and kept out of this as a result.

It's an U20 competition rather than U18 so will likely be a mix of the U21 and U18 squads - the likes of Johnstone, Keane, Cole, Thorpe et al are all eligible, plus (probably more likely) Blackett, Lawrence, Ekangamene etc

It's actually better than that as we didn't enter every year...we have won it 18 times in 39 entries...

Not sure if we're going to be affected by suspensions today - hard to tell using google translate but seems like Januzaj and maybe James have been booked in a couple of the games so far.

We won the last game 2-1, but will play for 3rd place because of inferior goal difference.

Basel scored a quick goal and United hit the post twice. A bit unlucky but there were also plenty of fouls by United player so there was never really a rythm in our game.

FC Zurich won the final 5-0 against Botafogo
