Well, attended the Roses match tonight, fine contest, Lancashire coming through as victors. I offer up this thread as a medium of discussing thoughts about the format; it's not cricket as we know it, but is it good entertainment? Personally I prefer it so much more to one day cricket; it basically cuts out the 30 overs of less interesting cricket, and if a game is one sided as often one day cricket is, it still gives the opposition a chance if they put one or two top quality overs together, and get's it over with quicker if not. Can never compete with test or multiple day forms of cricket for me, but it clearly attracts the public, and I consider it a great move for cricket. Long may it continue

The worst form of cricket by a long shot.Free hit indeed...fecking hell...

I suppose it beats watching soaps on TV.

As for the format, it's good fun in a circus kind of way.

Seriously though, it may actually cause great harm to the longer version.

As long as 20/20 stays at the importance it has a the moment and does'nt take over the Cricket calendar it's ok, but if it starts making test batsman like Cook into one-day players like Blackwell, we have a problem!

Who wants to go and watch blokes fannying about wafting at shots and blocking all day? No cnut...thats who...

People want to see people twatting sixes for fun, and having a go...

20/20 is the only cricket I could actually go and watch...

If by longer form, you mean 50/40 overs cricket; that's no bad thing for me. I find that often the dullest form of cricket personally

If by multiple day cricket, I'm not sure that will ever happen; the two can easily live side by side. The forms of cricket that pull the crowds in at the moment are test matchs and Twenty20, and there's a good reason for that

Up to Durham on Friday next for me...

You English might actually win something if there were any major twenty20 tournaments.

When is the world cup btw?

Watched Leciester Yorkshire last week, brilliant evening out, loads of big hits, a hat trick, and lots of beer! All for a tenner!

Indeed, only cost me £7.50 for the Lancs game

Flat movements and the prospect of crap weather have put paid to my Durham trip tonight alas, think Sunday is the next Lancs home game I'll be attending. No doubt be pissing it down then too...

Wahoo England win their first 20/20 international since their first one against Australia. Shah got 55 runs not out

Is that the end of the series? 1-1?

Yeah it was just 2 games.

I hope the format doesn't harm the longer vershion of the game. After all Test matches are the backbone for cricket in my opinion. Which is why Twenty20 games should not be played any more than they are at this moment.

There's a whole World Cup of the stuff in a couple of months.

Yeah but that only lasts about 2 weeks, having a tournament every two years isnt a bad idea. Its just when the number of Twenty20 games start to outnumber the tests; thats when I'll start to get worried.

The tests will remain the tests (If anything there's too much though at the moment, squeezed into a summer). And multiple day cricket will remain. What I'd call for is a fair diminishment of the 40/50 over game. Cos it's largely crap. You occasionally get the excitement at the end if it's close; in Twenty20 you get it more regularly, and you get to the exciting stage more quickly. Twenty20 will eventually kill off the one day game in my opinion, while Tests will still carry their great appeal as ever. The two forms can easily exist in companionship. 40/50 overs cannot. I won't be sad watching its slow demise...

Players know how to play 50/50...if that makes sense. They've cracked it.

There's no real way of cracking 20/20 as it's too frenetic from the off. More exciting and more unpredictable.

I don't know what I'm saying. I'm largely drunk.

Ahh I don't agree. Twenty20 can be 'cracked' just the same. Those dominating the game at the moment have worked it out. That doesn't matter though, what matters is that Twenty20 is a far more exciting short form of the game, and there is only room for one other form of the game bar multiple day cricket as far as I can see. In fact that last report (was it the Schofield or was that summat else?) I think recommended the scrapping of one of the domestic one day formats

Yeah I think everyone except for the ECB are for scrapping one of the domestic one day formats. The pro 40 league which is played later on in the summer, think only Essex take that competition remotely seriously. The best thing would be is to extend the 50 over competition slightly and totally scrap the pro 40 league.

I think England overally for the Twenty20 world cup would be best off having a few specialists in the squad. Not sure about Cook being the opener for a Twenty20 game. For a fifty over game, think thats ok.

Also as for Twenty20 eventually leading to the death of the other one day format, a lot will depend on how the Indian subcontinent take to it. The only reason one day cricket is still played a lot is down to the popularity over there and Twenty20 was first treated with suspicion.

Spot on. This Twenty20 World Cup will go a long way to starting the cogs turning. I think it's the Pro 40 league they are scrapping incidently. No need for two one day competitions. Tell you what though, the format of the 50 over comp is a pile of balls. They've really fecked that up for me. But they've got Twenty20 spot on, cheap, all encased in the few weeks period - it's captured the imagination

been and got washed out at lancs today. me and my boy were gutted.
just booked some tickets for a week on sunday in the pro 40 against essex.
bit gutted really as i wanted to go to the last 20/20 on friday but im off to liverpool to watch steely dan.
not seen pro 40 before but you say it is to be scrapped brad?
ah well, just hope my boy enjoys it as i am desperate for him to get into cricket. he is showing signs with the ball.
also i can get the full family in for a days entertainment for under 25 quid.
doesnt even get me into united!

Think the recommendation is to scrap the Pro 40 ay

Rain is murdering this years tournament, went to Derby yesterday but it just didn't stop pissing it down, ended up getting very pissed and playing allcomers scrabble in a pub (?!). Won 3 lost 2, fair record. Tonights Lancs game I believe has just been called off, if not they're recommending people don't bother travelling to see the match, which is surely essentially the same thing!!!
