Well, we know now that we've got to play until January with the players that we've got now. Looking at the squad now its pretty clear that its understrength and we needed Escude and a 4th striker. You can't just hope you don't get injuries, they do happen and size of squad is one of the key differentiating factors between the top teams and the also-rans.

I suspect that because we waited to sign Rio until after the WC he cost us a lot more than we expected, and that extra money would have gone on these positions. We ended up getting no one from Lazio to cancel the debt, and we've agreed to take the outstanding money over the course of a year even though they've now sold Nesta.

We may well get Escude and a 4th striker in January, but its going to be tough on the squad until then, with players playing out of position and a lack of options on the bench when a game needs shaking up. We're fortunate to have an easy CL draw, especially with Roy likely to be out for a while - but its the EPL where we're going to struggle with all these injuries and the lack of variety up front against packed defenses.

After such a calamitous season last time round, we all expected some serious strengthening - but that just didn't happen and I think we will now pay for that this season. Arsenal have come fast out of the blocks and shown they still look like Champions, and we don't. Real have added Ronaldo to make a real dream team, making them clear favourites for the CL trophy.

The best we can hope for this season is to establish a settled defense for the future, and to find a way to get the most out of our midfielders. Its going to be a tough season I think, and we're going to have to be humble at times and accept that we can't permanently win trophies every year and sometimes there is a need to rebuild a bit. I for one will never stop loving and supporting United as long as I breathe. As I said to a spurs fan recently, I'll support us through thick and thin, and he said, I've supported Spurs through thin and thin. We hate losing or even drawing, as we should, but we'll keep the Red Flag flying high. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

I just can't see how we didn't manage to close that deal, he wasn't costing that much, desperately wanted the move, and they were prepared to sell. Its false economy.

A perfect chance to give some young players a run.
Tierney should get a few games, Webber should be recalled after impressing and Forlan has to play a bigger part.
A closed transfer window will be great for us, allow us to concentrate on the important stuff.

none of them are good enough for us yet

thats why webber has been sent out on loan and anyway if ole cant get a game how can webber?

If everyone plays as we now they can, and if we we're coming through our bad run of injuries then the current squad wont be a problem

The more worrying 'if' is how understrength will we look if we continue squandering chances like we did today. I'm more worried about RVN then I am Forlan at the moment.

I'm sure I'm over reacting (2 days ago I described him as the best striker in Europe) but strikers need confidence, and confidence comes from goals. :(

If Veron hasn't been good enough for us, nor Forlan, then how can we expect Tierney, Webber etc. to be? They'll do well to end up as first choice premiership players, but I doubt they will be full internationals or world class like much of our first team.

I'm not worried about Ruud, he scored 8 in pre-season and two against the hungarians. His sharpness will improve, none of the premierships strikers look that sharp yet.

How do you know this? The same was said about O'Shea just over a week ago!
Call him back and give him ago, id rather see us playing natural full backs than having to play O'Shea there. We need 4 strikers, webber must be nearly nr 4 at the moment so bring him back.

You are over-reacting.

Strikers don't score in every game. Ruud and Ole both scored on Wednesday, and the team scored five.

When we've gone several games with a goal drought, come back and see me.

Till then, just take a couple of paracetamol. Or valium/prozac if you feel the need.

Next!

:)

I wouldnt think Ruud's confidence is low.

Ole's might be, although he has performed pretty well, and until today, looked sharper than Ruud.

Let them remember Mr. Yorke - three months without a bleedin' goal, and he still kept his place.

Yes strikers don't score every match, that's why we need more established striker. Or you want to see Fergie send on Forlan in the 89th minutes when we need to get a goal?

Rio is a big signing, with his performance today you can expect our goal conceded will be reduced apparently.

But I still think that we will regret we didn't sign a striker. We should have get both Duff and Escude by ship out a midfielder, but it just doesn't happen. From first few matches I still see we will struggle to break a well-estabished defence. Our attack is still too one-dimensional, in the sense that we rely too much on passing and too little on speed and individual skill. Compare to our rivals, Arsenal has a front line with nearly everyone can dribble, Liverpool also has Owen, Diouf and Riise, while we seriously lack someone to challenge opponent with pace and dribbling skill. Even Giggs has slowed down obviously in this year.

I hope some young players will be given a chance from now on, particularly fast and skillful midfielders and strikers. Besides, let's hope we can catch up with the top teams until January, and then Fergie will do the strenghtening when the transfer period opens again.

Ruud's goal will come. I put him in my fantasy football team and still don't consider to take him out yet. ;)

Skunk actually. And my point still stands, Owen, Hasselbaink, Viduka, etc. haven't got going yet, Ruud has its just we now expect him to score in every game for 7 consecutive games.

&lt;i dont understand, what info are you talking about?
If how mean why do i think webber is ready?
Hes playing well for Watford according to all reports and who is ahead of him @ Utd?
Diego, Ole & Ruud, no one else imo, so hes nr4 and he should be returned asap.

I don't agree Murt. Webber should stay at Watford and be eased into our side - I think a year doing well in Div 1 will do him the world of good.

Would you agree thats hes probably the 4th best striker in our possesion? Not including Giggs or Fortune etc at centre forward?
