Older but no wiser. At all. Not even a tiny bit.
So what is it then? We often hear of managers saying "If he wants to leave then he needs to hand in a transfer request".
So what does it mean to the player? Do they lose wages or something, is it a contractual clause?

It may be a stupid question but I'm used to asking those.

I suppose it's more that if a player is that serious about going, they can publically declare the player wants to leave, hence the fans blame the player instead of the club, would be my guess...

Most contracts entitle a player to a sort of severance payment if they are sold before it runs out. A formal transfer request waives the player's right to that payment.

Is correct.

If the club decide to sell you, you get a loyalty payment. If you ask to leave, you don't.

It's also fair to say that your club is in less of a bargaining position if you hand in a written transfer request. If Rooney does this, I'm unsure whether we'll get the full £40 million plus we'd want to sell him.

Hardly. Liverpool got 50m for Torres and he put in a transfer request I think.

Putting in a transfer request shouldn't affect the fee. A request can be put in but the club aren't obliged to accept it. In the case of Rooney, Chelsea will be no more aware of his interest in moving than they already were.

They don't get a sell on fee as well which is a percentage of the transfer in most contracts, usually 10% from what I've read

Is there still such a thing as the transfer list?

I would imagine so. It's perhaps not as simplistic as football games would have you believe but I'd expect clubs to make it fairly clear in the market that certain players are available.

I think that this term originated in Italy back in the 70s or 80s. At the end of the season, various owners of Serie A and B clubs would meet in a central place (I forgot the name), were they would discuss whose in the market and who is not. I dont know if something similar used to happen in England or Spain.

I think so, I remember seeing the FA one a while back. Probably this thing:

Can you sort the players by position? Quickly someone send the link to Moyes, this is the answer to our CM troubles!

A transfer request is simply a player approaching the manager to be assured of his place and then such a nefarious, lying manager then twisting the player's words into a request to leave.
