If Fergie wants to play 4-5-1 with a link up man behind Ruud then I can't think of anyone better than Francesco Totti. He has everthing one needs in that position good passing, dribbling, vision, and a great shot. As it is he plays that position for Roma behind Batistuta and Montella. Now obviously a player of Totti's calibre won't come for less than 30 mil pounds. So I say we should sell Veron in the summer because we already have Scholes. I am a huge Veron fan but I think even though he is playing really well in Europe we could do without him as our midfield is well equipped as it is with Butt on the bench. The only other player I can think of playing link up with Ruud is Ronaldinho. But as we have seen South American players don't do all that well in the premiership as they need alot of time on the ball. Our first priority should be a forward, Cisse, Shevchenko, Tristan or someone else. But I think Totti would be unbelievable for us and would love to see him don the red of Manchester United.

Totti's best position is playing behind TWO strikers. He's pretty ineffective playing as the second striker. A few years ago it looked as though Totti was going to be a world beater. I think his game has stagnated and he doesn't control a game the way Zidane can. Also tends to disappear in big games. Too much money for what we are going to get out of him IMO. And as was mentioned, Roma dare not sell him or the fans would tear the city apart.

Absolutely not. Totti is, as sidsutton said, best played behind two strikers. Behind one, he sucks big time.
He's a big girl. They call him "El Babino" (or something like that: forgive my miserable Italian) - "the baby" - in Italy. He dives, and he'd go missing in the Premiership. If you think Veron failed to adapt, you'd change your mind soon enough.
At the same time, he is an emensely talented player, just not suited to United. Roma would be unwilling to sell, and if they did, I suspect he'd only go to a club like Juve or one of the Milans. Even Spain would be unlikely.

Signing Totti from Roma would probably be as hard as signing Owen from Liverpool.

End of discussion

How can you say that. I think he's been one of the best players over the last couple of years and he played an integral part in Roma winning the Scudetto in 2001 after something like 20 years. If you think Totti is over-rated then how would you rate someone like Nicky Butt.

Under-rated.

Given that your Italian is miserable don't draw conclusions from anything in that language.

Il Bambino doesn't mean baby. It's more like "the kid", "the young boy" and has no connotations in terms of "being a baby". You can call Ole a cherub (sp?) but that doesn't make him a sissy!

Totti is all hype. he doesnt live up to his billing most of the time. And hes one of the biggest divers around.
It would take at least 25 million to lure him away from Roma.
No thanks.

Thought he was pretty pathetic the other night, no balls......... prefer him to throw his tantrums in some team other than ours........

over-rated

he doesn't beat juventus alone, but only scores a great goal, sends Cassano in the net with a fantastic assist and Batistuta with another great pass

I didn't draw my conclusions from my own understanding of the language, but rather from Italian friends. If you think they aren't qualified to tell me what the Italian public's perception is of Totti, think again.

agree with above comments:

1. Totti is overrated.

2. Totti only plays well behind 2 strikers.

3. He IS a baby when comes to playing football - all Italians are babies when comes to football, so this is not new.

Agreed, no one comes close to Pippo's diving after Klinsmann's retirement.

Agree 100%. I don't know how people can say Totti is over-rated. He has performed on the highest level and more often than not he delivers. Totti would be an unbelievable addition to our squad but it seems unlikely as he would cost anywhere from 25-40 mil. I say we should get rid of some of our fitst team players and gradually bring new faces in. Totti would be the perfect start.

it comes from people that in most cases say it with the idea of winding up/provoking or anyway haven't seen him playing regularly....

the latter group normally show up when he has the odd bad game out of 10, normally because he's back from an injury and isn't fit to play yet

a couple of seasons ago Totti had the world at his feet. Now though, IMHO he has stagnated somewhat. I dont believe his consistency is what it should be for a player at his level. Perhaps he needs a move to ignite his passion once more?

ps but hes still a diver ;)

So what if he was a diver. Diego Maradona the greatest player in the history of the game would also dive from time to time. Hagi of Romania another brilliant player also used to dive. But look at their careers. So we should overlook minor things like diving from time to time and concentrate on Totti's abbilities which IMO are very good indeed. Besides Fergie could sort out Totti's habit of going to ground a little too easily.

If Italians are such babies when it comes to football then maybe you can tell me why they have won the World Cup 3 times whereas England have only won it once.

fair thought!
He`s one of the most valuable players at the pitch.

Don`t believe he`ll leave Roma at his best form.
We can only dream about him :(

beside begging what will you do? ;)

hes a poof with a gay hairstyle and veron is better than him on his day
and plus we already one of the best midfields in the world when no on is injured............ ;)

Watched Totti last night against Ajax and his control is excellent but he gets puched off the ball to easily. He's a big guy but he goes to ground so easily. You can see it now, ball from Fabien to Gaz to Becks to Keane, all quick passes, then the ball goes to Totti and instead of keeping the pace in the move he'll fall over looking for a free thats what he kept doing last night. Stay in Rome!

Your absolutely right about Totti going to ground too easily however I think he possibly does that because he doesn't really have much of a supporting cast at Roma. If he were to play for us then with players like Ruud, Becks, Scholes, Keane, Seba etc I think he could really flourish.
