would it be accept able for me to make a thread with a link to the torrent for each united game as soon as it's available? i know you don't want stream links, but i thought this might be acceptable. i just want to help people have the chance to rewatch the game, have a copy, or just watch it at all. if not can i just link the torrent page but not the specific torrent? torrenting is legal in many cases, and since you can tape or tivo any game on tv i would think this would be an acceptable practice for televised programs.

Maybe you could set up a thread where users PM you for the direct link to get around the obvious problem.

I think that's what Hectic does in the entertainment forum for various TV shows.

No, you can't do a thread for that or for streams.

Niall doesn't want the PL after him, and believe it or not they're really aggressively going after websites.

Do they have e-sticks and e-stones?

Just PM whoever needs the link, like me ;)

You'd make a great representative for the PL and Sky ;)

pl and sky do nothing i think.....its the riaa and mpaa who are after

No they have real life lawyers. Who can take people to real life court. That we don't host the files MIGHT be a defence but I doubt Niall wishes to spend the time or money finding out.

they can do all they want, but the reality is that for every site they take down, 3 new ones open up. In the past year or so, the number of streaming sites has easily doubled, and it's much easier to find games now than it was last year or so. I'm talking about those streaming sites, not redcafe btw.

I agree that it is probably a futile effort. However, the Caf is an easy target. Niall has been "threatened" more than once.

Of course they are related, when people are sharing copyrighted material it doesn't matter how it's done.

ah, and they are both media. lots of similarities. i didn't mean to imply i didn't see that similarity, i just wasn't sure if he was confusing a torrent for something else, as they are not a well known technology.

Its against the law and they won't just ignore you because you are one of the few. Infact it can be said this forum is more than one of the few due to its popularity and the amount of members, both registered and non-registered, that will have access to the said link so in effect you are just becoming an element in the cycle of copyright infringement - aiding p2p programs, youtube and the like.

What is interesting is if they would just stop at the board owner or would they obtain the posters information and take them to court as well...

Oh and incase your interested: PL v Youtube

This website provides information and updates relating to The Football Association Premier League Limited, et. al. v. YouTube, Inc., et al., a copyright infringement class action pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. This action was filed on May 4, 2007 by the Football Association Premier League Limited (the “Premier League”) and Bourne Co. (“Bourne”) to stop the unauthorized and uncompensated use of their creative works and those of all other similarly situated copyright holders whose works have been displayed without permission on the YouTube.com website. The lawsuit names as defendants two YouTube affiliates (YouTube, Inc. and YouTube LLC), as well as YouTube’s corporate parent, Google, Inc. (together, the “Defendants”).

Alternatively, I would make a great representative for Niall and the Caf.

yep, just wondering Wibble, as far as I know it's only the PL games that we can't post links to on the forum, what about the other competitions like Copa America, or the Spanish league, that isn't an issue is it?

It would just muddle and confuse the rules too much, so they're all banned.

Free-spirit 'feck the man' anarchism is all well and good when you're the random kid downloading a link. Its a bit different when you're actually the one on the line.

When you are hosting a site and are an adult trying to build your life, lawyers for major corporations can completely destroy everything you've built and ruin your life for decades. This is the case even if you're right. Sky has the resources to sue. The average person does not have the resources to defend themselves.

This is not an abstract issue. Niall has already been threatened multiple times.

So in Britain you can actually be sued for linking to something that might host something that might be illegal?

well, sued and sued successfully are two different things. the riaa in the states is mostly just people stupid enough to settle out of court. from what i've read it is nearly impossible to prove an infraction, though i've only read about cases with music.

i understand the argument against getting involved, yet it is interesting that it is exceedingly difficult for the prosecution to win a case in these matters.

i wonder how it goes with things aired on television. this would seem to put it into the public sphere, and if you are allowed to 'tape' an EPL match i would think there is little difference with copying a tape someone else made. if anyone knows about such details i would be interested to hear it.

Umm, Norway is a Berne Convention nation as well, so you could be too.

I think some or all of Scandinavia is OK for torrents because a torrent doesn't contain copyright material itself. Obviously if they catch you with the downloaded file you could be screwed but the Caf would probably be OK if it were hosted there.

As someone said there is a difference between sued and successfully sued but the Caf can afford neither.

can't see how there's so much confusion. The rule is that links to PL games can't be displayed on the forums, the FA has no jurisdiction over Copa America games or those in Spain, or do they? Netresult was hired to look after Premier League, not after copa libertadores, so can't see how you could confuse English leauge games with non-English ones, it's very straight-forward really.

They'd have to catch you with the downloaded file, and prove that you downloaded it, which is next to impossible. At least in Norway, where I don't think they're allowed to use a torrent file to find people who are downloading it. They'd technically be breaking the law themselves.

I think the caf would rather be safe than sorry.

We know from experience that the easier the rule is the more likely we will be successful in enforcing it. It is Niall's arse that it is our job to protect.

It is hard enough enforcing the absolute ban. We believe that a split rule would cause chaos.

You're right about it being straight-forward though. There are a million and one places to get torrents. This isn't one of them.
