Following on from the discussion in the thread about Departed...

First up, I've got a question. Why the hell does everyone rate Ed Norton so highly? He's never lived up to all the hype he got from Primal Fear.

I'm biased, because Fight Club and 25th Hour are two of my favourite movies of the last ten years. Rounders is the movie bible to poker players too.

Haven't seen him put in a bad performance. He's nailed every role so far.

He's actually agreed to play Hulk in the new movie. That should be interesting.

Maybe because of Fight Club, American History X and Rounders to name a few. Fine actor.

While I've enjoyed the movies you've mentioned I've never felt he was outstanding in any of them, particularly Rounders.

When i do watch Norton, i honestly believing i'm watching the character he's playing rather than Edward Norton or some other character he played in a previous film as cliched as that might sound. Can't say the same about many other actors.

Christian Bale is pretty decent as well.

American History X.

I rate Bale, he's had some fine performances too, American Psycho for one and also he has made the role of Batman his own too, can't wait for the Dark Knight.

Looks like I'm the only one who thinks Norton is overrated. Where the feck are the film buffs?

How do you qualify as a film buff? Is there an exam I can take?

I agree.

Also think Joaquin Phoenix is excellent too, though he doesn't seem to make too many movies

Norton is amazing for reasons and roles mentioned above

Saw him on the Actor's Studio today, he comes across as a very down to earth bloke which is better than many of the publicity whores

No surprise mehro doesn't rate him

That clearly makes him a superior actor.

I don't really rate Norton.

The actors that I have been most impressed with or inspired by in my lifetime are the likes of John Hurt, Paul Newman, Christian Bale, there are special mentions for certain performances - Redford (The Sting, BCATSK), Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction, Twelve Monkeys) and Brad Pitt (Twelve Monkeys).

He was nothing special in Rounders. The movie clearly revolved around Damon.

Both Fight Club and American History X were plot driven. Good movies but nothing extraordinary about the acting. American History X is overrated in any case.

25th Hour is possibly the best thing he's done since Primal Fear and I give him credit for that but that's 2 good movies in a decade.

Ed Norton is ace. He's quite good in Spike Lee's 25th hour, too.

In American History X he appears very natural. It's scary, which makes him a good actor.

Bale deserves props for becoming a skeleton for The Machinist.

I agree with Spammy on all of the above (although I did not suck Bale's cock). Eric Bana is possibly the most promising actor atm.

Not seen 25th hour yet but your opinions on Fight Club and X I don't agree with.

Matt Damon deserves mention also for the Bourne Films and Good Will Hunting which he also co-wrote.

He never really chooses to do many mainstream movies. American History X is his closest one until recently agreeing to play Hulk

I haven't seen his recent movies like The Painted Veil but what he's done before, as Wolverine said, he's never come across as playing the same bloke. His performance in Red Dragon for instance

Norton really brought some emotion to the fore in the shower scene in American History X.

I felt his pain.

I rate norton, he was ok in rounders (great great movie). There was another movie he did which I forgot the name of but he was good in that also (he was drug-dealer sentenced to prison for like 5 or 10 yearas or something and has like a day or two to turn himself in and he falls in love with some schoolgirl or something, I don't know, forgot the name). He was also good in the Illutionist, although jessica biel stunk the joint up in that one.

Gary Oldman for The Firm, Leon and Drexel in True Romance, and countless others too.

It'll be interesting to see how Norton does in the Incredible Hulk; i thought the first Hulk was a bit of a letdown as i didn't think much of the CGI or the dramatic/pyschological tone of the movie. Eric Bana did a pretty reasonable job i feel with the character.
