Songs of the decade

Pitchfork:

500-201
200-101
100-51
50-21
20-1

Too much [I don't really know what to write here*] for my liking, but four of their top 20 picks (My Girls, Heartbeat, Heartbeats and Paper Planes) would have been sniffing at my own top 20. Also kudos for reminding me of the existence of Caecilia, and diskudos for not placing it higher.

Knowing myself I'll probably pop up again soon with my Top 500 Omissions from Pitchfork's Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s.

* Going through the list I kept thinking "oh come on, enough of this ...", but I still don't know what ... was. Help appreciated. And no, I don't think it was "hipster crap".

Cant be arsed to read it all right now but Outkast B.O.B as best single of the decade?

How did they come to that conclusion?

I guess it could be worse ...

I looked at the top 20 and I recognised about five of the songs there, and even those were nowhere near the greatest songs of the decade. Who the hell compiled that list? A thousand monkeys with a thousand typewriters?

I wouldn't wipe my arse with that list. It's a disgrace, a fecking disgrace.

- Didier Drogba

Some weird selections there, B.O.B number 1? All My Friends number 2? It's nowhere near the best track by James Murphy even.

It's probably set up after the authors "top plays" on iTunes.

MGMT - 'Kids'
MGMT - formerly "The Management" are Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden and this track had been lurking around since 2005, before being re-recorded two years later for the debut album "Oracular Spectacular".

9
The Killers - 'Somebody Told Me'
The first proper single to be released by The Killers in 2004. Brandon Flowers claims it has a "lot of sexual energy". Good lord.

8
The Strokes - 'Last Nite'
The saviours of guitar rock in the Noughties, New York's The Strokes made a splash in 2001 with this single, taken from their debut EP "The Modern Age".

7
Ian Brown - 'F.E.A.R.'
FEAR is the first single from the former Stone Roses singer's third album "Music Of The Spheres". Each line features the acronym F.E.A.R., which is pretty impressive.

6
The White Stripes - 'Seven Nation Army'
The first White Stripes track to feature bass guitar, this riff was everywhere in 2003. It's the first single from the Detroit duo's breakthrough album 'Elephant'.

5
Elbow - 'One Day Like This'
Spent more weeks in the Top 100 UK chart than any other Elbow single. Second track to be released from the Barclaycard Mercury Music prize winning album "The Seldom Seen Kid"

4
Muse - 'Knights Of Cydonia'
The only track in our Top 100 to feature galloping horses. This epic track closes the Teignmouth trio's 2006 album "Black Holes And Revelations".

3
Kings Of Leon - 'Sex On Fire'
The Followill brothers' biggest hit to date, it was taken from their fourth album "Only By The Night" in 2008. It was given a chart boost a year after release by being covered by one of the X Factor hopefuls.

2
Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor'
Not the band's first single, but the one that brought them to international attention in 2006, it's taken from their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not".

1
The Killers – 'Mr Brightside'
The Killers beat off competition from Arctic Monkeys with over 60% more votes for their 2004 single. It's a bittersweet tale of unrequited love, written by singer Brandon Flowers and guitarist Dave Keuning.

So only Kaizer fans voted? Not really worth taking notice of.
They don't top the list anymore! Unbelievable. But they do have 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Heartbeat is down to 41st. It's actually going to finish mid-table. Why? It simply doesn't make sense. Annie = Liverpool.

I actually think 'Crazy' is a good shout for song of the decade - more for what is represents (first single to reach No1 on downloads alone) rather than the track itself, although I do like it as well.
