Or should we have done so against Leicester...?

From UWS:
After the debacle that presented itself as the derby, the draw was made for the worthless and we were paired with Burnley, the tie to be played at Turf Moor. Now 'Sky' have deemed it 'tie of the round' so it's also on telly.

The tie will therefore be played on Tuesday 3rd December, kicking off at about 7.45pm I presume.

It comes just two days after the game at Anfield against Liverpool, and gives us three full days recovery before the Arse come to OT midday on Saturday 7th.

Should we just concede now and prevent injuries, play our youth team for experience, or take it all so damn seriously like Tottenham did.

We should go there to win with the same mix of youth and experience as against Leicester. After all, you never know, it could be the only trophy we win this season.

I would guess at a reserve and youth side of something like this:

Ricardo
Roche May Tate Pugh (Tierney's on loan)
Davis Rankin Timm Richardson
Nardiello Heath

Why risk any first teamer?

youth needs first team experience.. it's the only cup that we can let the youngsters have a run out..

i really would not look at it as the only cup we could win as Julian said.. that, IMO, is not even close to being 3rd priority of this club.

They might as well, there's nothing else to play for.

Where has Tierney been lent to?

I don't think the squad would be as weak as that. At least Stewart, Chadwick, Fortune and Forlan would definitely play if they are not injured.

I don't agree with this Worthless Cup attitude. For a start we're entered into it and we should go out to win it, at the same time giving our most promising youngsters a chance to show what they can do. Against Leicester the mix was just right between experience and youth. You don't want to throw all your youngsters in at the same time as they are more than likely to be overrun which won't prove anything and will dampen confidence. The youngsters need to have the support of the regulars and to learn from them on the pitch under proper match conditions. Use the opportunity to rest a few who need resting and to give games to others who need them to get back sharpness and form.

Fergie has said that we owe Worthingtons a bit of respect for what they've put into the competition. I agree with that. Alternatively,if we don't like it we should make representation along with the other Clubs of similar inclination to have the competition scrapped. Until then we should take it seriously, after all based on performances so far this season it might be the only Cup we end up with!

You must have not picked up on the fact that this game is between the liverpool and arsenal games. Can't afford to tire or injure a first teamer.

Tierney is on loan to Crewe, and had a good debut there. Chadwick is hoping to go on loan sometime, maybe he will play though. Stewart has been injured, not sure if he'll be recovered for it. Forlan will be on the bench most likely for the double header, so should be rested. Fortune similarly, though its less likely he'll play v. arsenal so maybe he might play in the worthington. Regardless, poor scheduling has brought this on the competition, it'll have to be the kids.

we dont want no fecking three handled cup!! play the fans

Is it? Wonder if its purely coincidental that he's returned after Liverpool bomb out of the CL.

Thought it was a perfectly good time to return to the forum myself. Shan't ask where you've been. ;)

My comments were more general rather than specifically on the Burnley match. However you're quite right about it being at an awkward time. Frankly I still think we could put out a decent side giving the likes of Nardiello, Richardson and Timm another run, with other hopefuls such as Pugh & Roche also involved. Fortune and Forlan don't need to be rested as they will be subs in the big games probably and haven't exactly started many matches this season. It would be a good time to put Forlan upfront to see if he can produce the odd spectacular goal which he seems to specialise in. Ideally I'd start with no more than three youngsters and the rest made up of experienced regulars. People like David May could get a game and JOS if Fergie persists in him sitting on the bench for the big games, as well as another outing for Ricardo or Carroll. Having said that I hear that May and Richardson have picked up injuries so that might change plans a little. All the same, and apart from some experimentation, I don't think we should take the match or indeed the competition lightly
