United target U.S. national 'keeper

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) - Manchester United have asked permission to talk to United States goalkeeper Tim Howard about a move to England, the New York/New Jersey MetroStars say.
"Manchester United have shown an interest in Timmy and he's quite a goalkeeper," said the club's general manager Nick Sakiewicz of the 24-year-old who was in the U.S. squad at last year's World Cup.

"They've asked us for some tapes of him in action and for permission to talk with him and get to know him.

"Things are at a preliminary stage and he's just signed a long-term contract with us."

Howard joined the Metrostars in 1998 and has established himself as the club's regular goalkeeper.

What the guy like?
sounds like a new back up keeper

not too shabby, plays for us when Friedel and Keller are unavailable due to club commitments

his mother is hungarian (or has the ancestry) and when they join the EU he could get a passport

the only reason i can see us getting him is to try to have an American player to try and get some added interest

Don't really know much about him but apparantely he's just signed a long term deal so he won't come cheap

I dont know too much about him either, I have heard some very good things about him but I havent seen any footage or anything. Im pretty sure he did just sign a new contract not long ago but I dont know as if he will be extreamely expernsive, cant see why we want him though unless SAF is going to do us a favour and kick Ricardos arse out. If anything it could be a deal to get some some US interest happening.

Not a particularly big star in the US, but he's very good, probably the best keeper in MLS. In terms of skill, he's already the #3 US keeper. His reflexes are incredible.

I think he could be as good as Friedel given a few more years of development. MLS is overflowing with goalkeepers and like I said, he's not a big star, so I can't imagine him going for more than $3-4M

Well with Ricardo mouthing off to the press every 5 minutes on the Beckham subject, I can't see him staying beyond the end of the season.

I'd prefer us to try for Robinson from Leeds

but we have a 1st choice goalie, Lifo. robinson is too good to simply replace Ricardo. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

he is 6'3 and 210 pounds according to the official US Soccer website, which i would expect to be accurate

He is very good, no doubt. His reflexes, as stated before, are simpyl amazing. Very good shot-stopper as well. His positioning needs a little improvement, but hell, he is only 23.

He could start in the Premiership right now. But he needs a little more experience before he could start for any top club in the Premiership.

We don´t really need yet another goalie, do we?

No. We don't. Unless we transfer some of the one's we currently have.

I yet have to understand the Ricardo signing. Carroll´s a good backup.

I don't rate either to be honest.

I´m actually a bit surprised we haven´t signed an American player yet. Some could probably do a job for us as a squad player and with us going to the US this summer ....

The only American player that would be a sure starter for United would be Friedel. Donovan would make the bench, and I think could start given time.

i can't think of any reason why we should replace barthez at this point

i wouldn't want to see donovan at united, he isn't good enough right now, and he is wasting away in the shitty MLS, plus he is small and has little self control (USA vs. Argentina in Feb. is an excellent example)

Jesus guys, don't be so sensitive. I am not saying we should get rid of Barthez. I am simply saying Friedel would start over him.

I don't rate Carroll at all.

Heres a link to his MLS bio.

What about that draft pick goalie and college drop out or whatever in the World Soccer mag,is that guy any good?Is draft picks of any use?

Johnny Walker, playing in Chile?

He came up before this season to try out for San Jose, because the #1, Joe Cannon, left for France. I heard he was good, but not much better than the current backup. He wasn't offered a contract.

Ricardo was signed when Barthez was going through his goalie/circus clown phase. SAF was worried he might just turn up with a permanent red nose one day. But Barthez has cut out his antics this season though I wish he was a couple of inches taller. I would be interested in an American player in Utd's ranks coz I think the US players have that bit of heart in them that seems to be a dying trait amongst footballers nowadays. Probably because they want to be taken seriously as footballers on a global scale rather than just soccer players in N.America. :)

Imo the three players who would do well at United are Donavon, Beasely, and Quaranta. I've seen Howard play and he's quality, but I don't know how he would fit into our plans unless we're thinking of getting rid of Carrol or Lopez.

Got his name,Alecko Eskandarian,is he any
good?

I don't know that much about him.

Alecko plays forward. Good skills, but too small and probably not fast enough to really be a star in MLS. Of course, he hasn't played an MLS season yet, so it's very hard to say.

There are certainly a lot of young forwards who, in my opinion, would be better transfers. Ed Johnson (Dallas) is still a teenager, but could be fantastic. Jeff Cunningham of Columbus (pace), Twellman of NE (target man), and Ruiz (finishing) from LA are all also very good in different ways.

Beasley and Quaranta both have lots of potential in midfield. Convey I like too. Some of the new guys this year: Memo Gonzalez, Arturo Alavarez-could be great. Americans are getting professional development from a young age for the first time on this kind of scale. Donovan, I don't know. He's sort of stagnated developmentally and he gets upset or knocked off his game very easily. I want to see him play hungry this season, like he has something to prove again.

If Clint Mathis ever bothers to lay off the junk food and get his head together, I think he could be easily the best American field player ever to play in MLS. Based on how he's done in the WC, and against Brazil and Germany, I think he is, skillwise, capable of moving to a much higher level of competition.

With the number of youth playing and the facilities the US has, I'm sure some great players will emerge. Not to generalize, but Americans tend to bring a work ethic and optimistic confidence to everything, including sports. Success is expected.

I don't think he has stagnated at all. The end of last season, he was exhausted from the world cup. Although you could see that with all the players--Beasley, Mastroeni etc...

They need two more years in the U.S., and then they need to go to Europe--and to a team where they will play.

beasley will be a terror if he can improve his final ball and add some muscle, he is the one that is really impressive

the same could be said for convey, he looked very impressive in attack against argentina and he was played out of position at left back

i simply don't think donovan can make it at this stage, he is a prima donna and should have gone back to leverkusen this year because as bad as they've played he would have gotten an excellent chance to prove himself, on one hand you see runs like he made vs. Venezuela that look great but their defenders all stopped after the first missed tackle and you see how he was utterly thrown off his game against Argentina by Burdisso, Milito, and that long haired left back that i can't remember his name

and as for Howard having Tourette's, from what I've heard it is not an issue at all (if it was he wouldn't have made it as far as he has currently obviously)

Donovan will make it. He has just as much talent as anyone his age. What he needs to do, and what we are beginning to see, is for him to relax, calm down, not lose his temper, and be under control when playing. You saw him at his worst against Argentina (even though he still played well). I think Bruce had a nice little chat with him (NYC Style) and told him to cool it. Consequently, he played a whole lot better against Venezuela. He will continue to improve as well, mark my words...
