Tiger Woods

Looks bad, the way he played at the Masters he looked like the old Tiger but injury has set him back again and don't know how long he is going to be out for.

I hope he doesn't try to rush back and play in the Open Championship if he is not fully recovered. Might be best for him to take it slow and ensure he makes a full recovery.

4 major operations to the knee and a dodgy achilles. At 35 that's not good, even the most modern and best medical science won't help. I doubt if he will be able to swing like he used to... and that begs the question whether he would want to continue if he can't get anywhere near the level he was at pre 2009.

I remember a thread on here where someone actually claimed Tiger was the greatest sportman of all time. How I laughed.

He certainly had the potential to go on and become the greatest. It looked like he was going to go on pissing majors for many years to come!

BTW, it wasn't me!

A golfer could never be the greatest sportsman of all time no matter how good he was.

I had this debate before Nearco and I have to say his impact on golf and its worldwide popularity is a valid argument for. Think back to golf 15 years ago. Its was a different world completely to todays tour. Whereas I dont exactly agree with the statement I dont think the claim should be as easily dismissed.

Sure he couldn't. Just like its not hard to kick a ball, not hard to sit on your arse and drive a car, not hard to just simply run at somebody, not hard to hit a little red ball. feck me. Every sport is different. We saw at the Masters just how hard it can be with a choke of Norman proportions. You can't slip up once. One shot in golf can destroy an entire round and lose you a title. It can also win you a title.

Name on the trophy

The best footballers have people trying to stop them physically. Same with American sports. Don Bradman had to deal with the bodyline series. Mohammed Ali had the likes of Foreman and Frazier trying to kill him.

Michael Schumacher had to contest against g's upwards of 6. Tiger Woods plays a game that is probably the most mentally demanding of all and lets not neglect the massive pressure on his upper body.

Just because somebody isn't punching them in the head, kicking them in the ankle, doesn't mean that they don't work just as hard. In fact i'd say most f1 drivers are better athletes than any of the name you mentioned. They have to train harder then footballers and train longer then boxers.

I'm not saying the best of them don't deserve credit. But no matter how great he was or may become again he couldn't match a Pele. an Ali or a Sugar Ray.

Well he's a single man now, so i see no reason why his swinging cant be even better given the non-existence of marrital vows now...

My favourite Sports person of all-time is Michael Jordan. You can watch endless vids of him doin some magical things & his nailing the winning scores at the buzzer are incredible. Ultimate team player & ultimate individual!

Its all about opinions of course & we should respect them, but anyone who disagrees with me on this one is utterly wrong... :)

Yep, big fan of Michael Jordan too. I think dismissing sports because there isn't an opponent that can physically stop you is ridiculous, it would surely be even tougher when you think about it because although somebody can't directly stop you, it also means you can't directly stop them. You have to trust your ability 100%.

Tiger out of the British Open, good decision imo needs to fully recover before he starts playing again. Hopefully he'll be ready for the PGA Championship.

Exactly, if you bring Nearo's theory to the end level, then surely the greatest sportsman ever should be some fight to the death naked and barehanded guy. Like, how can you be the greatest if someone isn't tyring to kill you with you bare hands?

A bit excessive that.

Anyway, it's all looking a bit moot now - it's looking doubtful he'll get to big Jack's Major total.

Wayne Gretzky is better.

With the force he puts into his shots to get big distance, his joints in legs and arms take a hammering. Think he should jump in and out of an ice bath for the next few months.

Nice touch!

RETURNING WOODS PAIRED WITH CLARKE

Open champion Darren Clarke has been paired with "good friend" Tiger Woods in the American's comeback week, as was widely expected.

The two former winners of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational - Woods seven times, Clarke just the once - will tee off at 1.40pm local time (6.40pm BST) in the opening round in Akron on Thursday.

Unlike most events, it is leaders out last from the second round onwards.

Given that Woods texted Clarke and gave him some tips as he tried to win his first major, the possibility of pairing the duo was too good to resist for the organisers.

"I'm delighted to be there - I'll play wherever they put me, but it's great he's coming back to play again," said Clarke last week when Woods announced his return date.

The 42-year-old Ulsterman would not have been in the field but for his Sandwich triumph, which lifted him from 111th to 30th in the world.

World number one Luke Donald partners Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and world number two Lee Westwood, who a year ago had to pull out of the tournament with a leg injury, is with Ryder Cup team-mate Graeme McDowell.

Rory McIlroy, McDowell's successor as US Open champion, plays with defending champion Hunter Mahan in his first start in America since his eight-shot success in Washington in June.

First time in a long time he has had two good days in a row. Would be great to see him recapture some of his old form, golf with Tiger playing well is a much better watch.

Btw, did anyone see Daly's behaviour - what a cnut.

Intentionally hit all the balls he had into the water then walked off. Doing himself loads of favors, sure that's what he needs to keep getting sponsors exemptions. Otherwise he better get used to the Nationwide Tour (if they'll take him). His girlfriend's a class act, too.

Tiger's +2 through 5 today, one shot back of the group in the lead.

It goes without saying, but the difference between old Tiger and Tiger of today was Saturday in Oz. He never had off days before and even when he did, it was still rarely worse than par. Once he puts together 4 good rounds and gets a result, the confidence will come streaming back.

Delighted for him. Golf will be better with him playing like his usual self.

I read today that he founded this event a few years ago to raise funds for his Foundation.

If true, you've got to feel slightly sorry for him and the way he's been treated in the press - he's clearly not quite the cnut journalists would still have us believe.

Today, for example, Lawrence Donegan has seen fit to write yet another snipey article in the Guardian about him. Nice to see the public so overwhelmingly in favour of him these days though - shows how out of touch and bitter some golf journos are.

Tigers facing the same issues that Schumacher has faced for the last 2 years. For years, they were untouchable. Even when they had poor rounds or events, you knew that it would only be a matter of time until they made you eat your words, but for both, the last two years have shown that they are only human and those that had to sit their and bite their lip for almost a decade and a half, can now write all the resentful bullshit that was built up over the years of having success thrown in their face.

What those arseholes don't get though is that recent shenanigans 'and the same with Giggs' can never take away from what they have achieved. Michael still owns nearly every record in the book of F1 and Tiger is still one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Its as if they're trying to change history in an attempt to belittle the achievements of others, but its ignorant to think that the people whom were there, will forget so quickly. I know exactly where I was when I saw Michaels last f1 win, when I saw Tiger make one of the most unbelievable chip shots in golfing history. Moments that regardless of what people write, will be etched into my brain for as long as I live.

Exactly.
