REPORTS: UNITED CLOSE ON THURAM

Manchester United are close to sealing the £18.9million capture of France defender Lilian Thuram from Juventus.

Both Tuttosport, the Turin-based sports daily, and Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Monday that negotiations have gone well between the clubs with a Juve representative having met Old Trafford officials last week.

Thuram, who moved to Juventus from Parma, cost the club £22million but he has always been admired by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager.

He admitted recently: "If Sir Alex Ferguson calls and says 'you can play in the middle', I will consider my future."

His Juve team-mate and former Parma colleague, Gianluigi Buffon, also said: "I think that Lilian will go away (leave Italy)."

£18.9m is a bit much i'd say.

agreed....though not much more than what we reportedly offered for him last year (16m).

If that's the price take him. United need a solid defender. (or two).

Now with Barthez, Blanc Thuram and Silvestre Fergie will now have pay for Gaz Neville to learn French!

it good news

BUT

this means if the board hadn't been so tight arsed last season for an extra 4mil on top of what we are suposedly about to pay, we could have had thuram this season and surely wouldn't have had half as many problems.

nice one board ya bunch o wankers, NOW get the fecking cheque book out and seal it.

 / :D

Hardly. Juventus payed 22m and gave Parma two players, hardly anything could or should have matched.

Not quite, there is no way he is as positionally good as Larry, so his lack of pace in his latter days would def. show

If everyone is having doubts about age and speed, then perhaps United should make a 25m quid bid for Nesta. He's 25 with speed and will last twice the time Thuram will. I'd be happy with either CB, but Nesta is my target. Re-sign Blanc and sign Mexes next summer. Train Brown as a future RB, with cover at CB. If Blanc retires, offer 12m for Ayala. Nesta/Ayala would be awesome, but Thuram/Ayala would be great too. I'm torn.

Thuram would be an ideal signing, though 19m is a touch more than I would have liked - still, the PLC can deal with that side of the deal. Hopefully we will still have adequate resources to buy Ayala as well. Thuram and Ayala in the middle, with Gary and Micky on the flanks, throw in a world-class 'keeper (say, Fabien Barthez) and we could have the best defence in the league ! I only hope this is true. :D

Gaz-Blanc-Thuram-Silvestre is good enough. But would be better with Ayala too.We dont need a new keeper. We need the current one to keep his focus like he did the last part of the season.

Sounds goood, 19mil is a little high but what can you expect when they paid 22mil plus two players. And after Fergie missed out on him last season, he called Thurham the best defender in the world, so- hes getting his man. I'd expect another full back now.

at the time our defence was not a big enough problem to go blowing big money on Sol. We had Stam and we poured our transfer money in to Ruud and Seba. Nobody could have foreseen the Stam fiasco, not even Fergie, so SAF thought it better to spend money where he thought we needed it instead of ripping up the wage structure. Sol is not as impressive as some make out, and while he could have been a good signing, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

What makes you think Nesta, who's even more 'Lazioman' than Veron, wouldn't be making the same noises Seba does?

United block Thuram deal

Wednesday May 29, 2002
The Guardian

Sir Alex Ferguson's attempts to sign Lilian Thuram for Manchester United have been thwarted by the club's plc.
Juventus are demanding £20m for Thuram, who will be 31 in January, and Ferguson has been told to seek an alternative. Barcelona's Philippe Christanval, who is unhappy at the Nou Camp after only a season there, is believed to be the United manager's target.

Ferguson tried to sign Thuram, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, last summer when he was put up for sale by Parma. Instead, the player opted for Juventus. However Thuram has become frustrated by the tactics of the coach Marcello Lippi, who insists on playing him at right-back rather than in his preferred centre-half position.

The United manager, who intended to play Thuram in central defence, has now turned his attention to the 23-year-old, who moved to Barcelona from Monaco in a £7.7m deal.

With Louis van Gaal having been reinstalled as Barcelona's manager, a major turnover in players is expected as the Catalan club attempt to close the gap on Real Madrid. Christanval is valued at £15m and the deal may go through once the World Cup is over.

This will be a horrible mistake if it is true. In the defence I truly believe that we need to sign a top drawer. Someone who not just perform well, but must perform VERY well, so as to inject confidence and stability into the whole defence. I don't think this Christanval is anything so great if he fail to get his place from Leboeuf in the French team.

If, as mentioned, it is the PLC again who block the move, this is the X times (I don't know how many times) the PLC's short-sightedness has hinder the strengthening of our team and our progress to become the best football club in the world. Last season PLC blocked the purchase of Di Canio, left Fergie still highly regreting it at the end of the season. If this time Fergie can't get Thuram because of the hindering of PLC, I afraid we will again need to regret it later in next season.

Actually I thnk Christanval is ok ... but of course not top drawer ... To me after Thuram then it will have to be Ayala and nobody else ...

19mil for Thuram is a lot I have to admit ... It's a totally different story from Jaap case - we signed him at 25 and for 10mil that's already a bit high for the standard then but he's got plenty of years in him left ... Thuram case - we are looking for what - 5mil per season if he could stay fit for next 4 years !!?

20m for lily is too much money. ayala is a better choice anyway.

Its clear Utd are going to sign a CB, Thuram, Ayala????Who knows???But I think it is only going to be one player. PLC is too miserly to go for two. Besides I think if they were going for 2, Blanc would have left.

But what about a left back. Silvestre is making too many noises these days and I think he needs competition - should keep him awake for 100 minutes.

I still cant believe they (Utd PLC) did not want to pay 3 to 4 million for Di Canio........would have given SAF headaches but could have changed everything......

Well considering he's well pissed off with Cragnotti recently for mugging about...

The thing about this is that defenders peak later than strikers and midfielders, so 30 is when they're at their best - and if you want the best then you've got to pay for it. Juve did, so why shouldn't we? I do hope there is no truth to this story, and the plc. isn't being shortsighted again. Comments regarding Di Canio are spot on, he was a bargain and could have got us a double (who knows?).

Christanval though is cack, nowhere near the same class, he wouldn't improve our team at all - quite frankly I think that is bollocks. Which might mean the rest of the article is too. Ayala would still be my preference, even over Thuram, and Rio would be my third but not at the sort of money being mentioned. Although he does have time on his side.

Canavaro has previously mentioned that Thuram is a better defender than him and Nesta. Also being 30 isn't such a big deal, not for defenders anyway, since players nowadays are extremely fit. Thuram can probably perform at the very best for at least another 4-5 years which is plenty. Also, I think we are gonna go in the transfer market with quite a bang this summer. Not only Thuram but also atleast 2-3 big names. Why? because we are gonna have enough money! Here is a quote from BBC news, "In August, the club will launch three new strips, part of a 13-year worldwide distribution deal with sportswear firm Nike worth a minimum of £333m ($428m) to Man Utd." Well that is like £25-26/year minimum. It is by far the biggest shirt deal ever in Football.

Its only natural to expect some 'tactics' in negotiating his price. And though Thuram may be first choice initially, Ayala for 15mil at 29 may start to look better.

With the CL at OT next season, we really have to win it, a near miss is just not good enough.
That means having the right players to do the job, can't afford compromises.

Then the born and Bread captain of Lazio would just turn around and totally forget about the club, unlike an argentenian who was only there for two or three seasons AND was accused of using a false passport because of the club.

Give me a break.

Ayala is the only alternative that is as good as Thuram, so I'd be glad if we can sign him. But on the other hand, 20m is certainly not too much for one of the best defenders in the world.

I'd agree with that, Ayala/Thuram, either or both! Christinval is a donkey.

Ayala is the best cb that we have been linked with, the PLC should get him asp, before he to is lost, and I still think Di Canio will come.

And what do you think Ferguson would give to have a donkey like Hyypia in your defence? :D
