Make if it what you will....

Lilian Thuram will become a Manchester United star this summer in a £16.6m switch from Juventus to Old Trafford. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is finally expected to clinch the signing of the French World Cup winner after missing out on the defender last summer. The Italian giants took Thuram from Parma in a £22m deal, but it's understood the Frenchman is leaving after becoming disillusioned with a right-back role. Preliminary discussions have taken place and Thuram has been told he'll be United's main centre-back, possibly alongside Laurent Blanc, who is debating whether to stay on for one more season.

sounds goooooood to me ! ;)

although it leaves me a little worried about ...

- will 1 defender strenghen us enough?
- will there be any money left for other transfers?
- what happens if blanc doesn't sign

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh roll on Wednesday

A right-back would be nice too.

This would allow Gary Neville to play in his best position in centre-half alongsie Thuram since it looks like Blanc's gonna leave

Defence next season:

G Neville Thuram Ayala Silvestre
:) :) :) :)

B cridland, you're spot on mate my sentiments exactly.

Neville - Thuram - Ayala - Silvestre

PS: did you see Ayala's goal last night against malaga, that guy has got some amazing aerial ability, cant wait to see him in a united jersey next season. :)

It seems that we only sign quality defenders when they r set to retire.

Possible scenario;
If Thurham came as 1st choice CB, Blanc would want similar assurances that he would be a first choice CB for one season. Which would probably be accepted by Brown, O'Shea and Ronny as they have not been regular enough to have a claim yet. With 5 CBs in the squad plus Gaz if needed, we would have another season to find Thurhams' partner following Blancs' retirement, be it Brown, O'Shea or a new CB if the two youngsters we have don't prove top grade(no compromises).
I'm not sure Thurham will be 'the fix', but he IS a world class defender, something which currently we do not have IMO, sorry to say.

Why not? Did anyone think we'd sign Veron before last Summer?

I never heard Nesta has any problem with his Italian passport though.

IMO I would not go for Nesta. Though he may be an excellent signning but then again...He's a star for Italy and I would not think that he would actually come over to England.

Similarly for Real's Raul. He will stay over at Spain forever.

However, for South American players, they are opposite, which we known preferably hopping around until their retirement.

I would prefer United to use the home grown talent like O'Shea and Brown.

Give then a run a year or two. And I'm sure that they will come thru' it.

£ 16,6 mill for a 30-year old  Thuram is a great player, but the pricetag way too high! Sadly, the players are just getting more and more expensive :(

Which is why I prefer to use our current youngster instead.

Though it's dangerous but I think it's a risk worth taking over a long term.

Vieri didn't have passport problem when he went to Atheletico Madrid.

I love seeing home grown players make the grade, however, we MUST sign at least one central defender if we're going to challenge for the PL and CL next season. O'Shea and Brown are not ready as a CB partnership challenging for major honours.

If Thuram signs and Blanc stays, we'll have 3 french defenders!!! IT'S FRENCH INVASION!

Can you imagine Gary Neville speaking french to Barthez, Blanc, Thuram & Silvestre that would be a very funny sight! Monsieur Gary (talk about hovis & baugettes!)

Raoul...didnt you post the Thuram topic, same time last year? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" /> That was last season, this is a year later. ;)

What a defence this would be:

Neville - Thuram - Mexes - Silvestre

with Barthez in goal ! :) Perhaps Gary could learn French as well to have perfect communication at the back... then again, maybe not. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

The defence will be

Brown...Thuram...Nesta...Silvestre

Sorry but I still don't see why Nesta will come. I just can't see what thing we can offer to him (that other Giant clubs in Italy cannot) to attract him to come here. Veron would not have joined us last season if not for the passport scandal, that's already a commone sense.

A better chance to win the CL than any club other than Real? Frankly, Italian clubs are not doing much in the CL in recent years and United have a better chance than most in that, also, I doubt Lazio would want to sell their star player to Inter or Juve. I still think it's possible.

Trust me Cragnotti[Lazio owner] will sell him to other clubs if he gets the right offer. The Nedved and Salas sales are still unbeliavble.

That factor of CL is also very weak. Although Italian club are not doing well in CL in these two or three years, but it's unlikely that the Italian players themselves would think that this situation will continue. Your second point is true though. Lazio won't want to lose him to other Italian club. But that still depends on how the player think about moving aboard.

 Does the Cragnotti family own Juventus as well ??? ;)

I wonder if Igor Tudor's injury will affect Juve's willingness to part with Thurham?

Good signing in my opinion. Probably the best of the 'serious' links in the past couple of months. Proven, plus, he's French so good relationship with Mikey and Fab at the back.

It seems he got shares in Juventus. He really wanted to beat Inter.P.S Paulo Montero will return from injury soon.So the cbs Juventus got is Thuram,Tudor,Ferrara,Iuilano,Montero + the certain arrival of Cannavaro.

Latest Italian nonsense is that its not Scholes they want to swap Thuram with, its Giggs!

Giggs in unlikey Juventus link
by Espen Andre Skjerve
09.05.2002

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs is wanted by Italian giants Juventus.

A deal would apparently include Lilian Thuram going the other way with Sir Alex Ferguson being a keen admirer of the French defender.

Juventus see Giggs as the perfect provider for Serie A's joint top goalscorer this season, David Trezeguet.
