'I think United are at a higher level and will reach the final.' France defender Lilian Thuram, unhappy at being played at right back by Juventus, has identified United as a possible answer to his problem.

He said: 'I am a central defender and if United said I could play in the middle I would consider my future at Juventus.' Ferguson, who knows Laurent Blanc is likely to retire at the end of the season, enquired about Thuram before his £22m move from Parma last summer.
