Thuram wants to be United or Milan middle-man

Thursday 11th April 2002

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram has revealed he will seek a transfer to Manchester United or AC Milan if he keeps being played at right-back.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson or Carlo Ancelotti call and say: 'You can play in the middle,' I will consider my future," he said. "I have no doubt that I am a central defender, but as a player I can only do what the manager wants."

Thuram denied that playing on the right for Juve was no different to fulfilling the same role for France.

"There is a big difference," he said. "I play fewer matches for the national team than with my club and it is easier for the France coach to move one player and let me play centrally. With Juventus, all ten would be messed around.

"This is the first time I have played so many matches as a right-back," he added. "I am not used to it and, even though I think I have had a good season, I am sure I can do better in the middle.

"My team-mates understand the effort I have put in. They know I have been trying to accept the new situation and working hard. I have got much better at crossing, for example.

"But now I want to understand what the future holds. I will have to discuss a lot of things with Lippi. I have been ready to sacrifice myself before, but now I want to enjoy my football again in my proper position - and as soon as possible."

Thuram's outburst is sure to alert United, who will lose Laurent Blanc to retirement in the summer. Injuries to Wes Brown and Ronny Johnsen this season have also left the Premiership giants short of central defenders.

Ferguson enquired about Thuram before his £22 million move from Parma to Juve last summer and would jump at the chance to land the elegant Frenchman a year on, providing funds were available.

Milan are in a similar situation, with veteran Billy Costacurta possibly on his way out at the end of the season. Ancelotti also knows all about Thuram's prowess from their time together at the Ennio Tardini stadium.

Hofland and Thuram in the middle next year would be an exciting combination...
But I'm not sure if ManYoo will spend that much in one year. Hofland will cost at least $15 mil if not more and Thuram would be closer to $30 mil because Juve don't really need the cash, so won't give him up cheap. To tell you the truth, I doubt Thuram will go anywhere, especially if he has a good world cup campaign...
Anyway, we don't need him, we can just use Brown and O'Shea in the middle, their world class in my book!!!
:D

If he stays at Juve, it would mean that they have promised the central defenders position. That would mean that Tudor might be surplus to their plans. So we might get Tudor, which would not be too bad. If he does not get what he wants then he is definitely leaving. We could have both Miki and Fabian convince him that United is the best option for him. And if we can convince Larry to stay another year, all we have to do is sent Gazza for French classes over the summer, and we will have a back line that speaks the same language.

If we sign Thuram, it'll probably increase our chances of getting Mexes too!!

Thuram is already 30. But he is physically very fit, which means he can still play at least 3-4 years for us.
If it is around 12-13 million then I say okay we should go for him.

I think it's hilarious that Thuram is now seeing that he possibly made a mistake going to Juventus. Juve are nowhere near the standard they used to be, and Thuram sees United in the semis of the European cup - something any footballer would desire. That, in addition to the fact that United would have possibly centralised him, makes it all even worse.

Don't see him coming this summer, but we can always hope. I wouldn't pay any more than 15m for him - and like someone said above, Juve don't need the cash.

I say buy the fecker! For £15mill.

F***K him. Wh does he want to come now? Well maybe Fergie should just appease it and bring it to Old Trafford in the Summer. How could he imagine Juve would win a European cup ahead of Man Utd. I hope his learned his lesson

He's got 4-5 good years left.....

I would have to start having doubts about his attitude reading that article....you don't hear any of the utd players talking about putting themselves before the team....

Still you never know, for sure someone somewhere is trying to generate something, if only a story. Anyway he would be a first choice CB if he came- to me the story rings true.

Who cares what the fee is, as long as he helps us avoid the daft goals we've let in this year.

Thuram - Mexes

My new battlecry ;)

You can't criticize Thuram for his attitude, he has always been exemplary. His club had made promises so he's disapponted. He has always said he prefered to play as a CB.

Yes, he's 4 years younger than Desailly and 6/7 years younger than Blanc.

New Article from the Beeb...

And in Thurham's case the age factor is a lesser factor, not saying its irrelevant but, hes an excellent athelete. As SAF said-'fit as a flea'.

How much would Thuram cost?? I'd say Utd. should not spend more than 12-14m on him...he's 30.....but I cant see Juve selling him so cheap...they paid lots for him

They'll likely want to spend during the summer, which will mean they will also sell to offset their losses. I can't see us paying more than 16m for him. Juve paid 23m for him last summmer.

Thuram says he would join us only if he could play in CB, this does not make sense imo. His best position is obviously RB, he is terrific there, tho not quite as good in CB. If so, why spend 15m+ on a player who is better as a RB when we could get a better quality CB like Ayala for that money. I admit he would be a good buy, but we would then need to sacrifice the money needed for bringing in a new striker for another defender. If we could bring in Thuram, Mexes and (or) Ayala / Hofland for a total of about 40m, then great.

Agreed. F..k him! Let him rot in hell (Juventus). I'd rather get Tudor or Fourdor. The Tudor's have a long proud history in England.

This is not what he thinks. He would prefer to play in CB and thinks he's better at this position. BTW, he had suffered during the Euro 2000 (obviously he played as a RB), particularly vs Spain.

Fergie reckons he is the best defender in the world.

That means Fergie wants his man, better we get him this summer when he is 30 rather than wait til he is 36 hm?

I would personally invest in youth cos I feel our team is getting too old lately...I miss the days when kids won doubles.

Guys THuram is a CB....It was only because of Blanc and Desailly that he moved to RB..

He is fantstic at CB..
