NEARLY MADE FOR THURAM THE MANCHESTER

The yielded French defender for 30 million euro
The passage of Lilian Thuram to the Manchester United is being defined in definitive way. The French player lascerebbe the bianconero club for a figure around 30 million euro. In the next few days the official announcement of the conclusion of the long and laborious appeared negotiation will be given and that in sure moments it has seemed on the point to interrupt itself in definitive way. Now instead it seems all resolving.

The same site has Sven going to Inter if Cuper takes over the Argentinian NT with Inter going for Scholesy & Giggsy too

I really dont think we are going to get Thuram, there is no way that the plc will pay £20mill for a 30yr old defender!

Ferdinand or Nesta will be at the heart of our defence next season, not Lilian Thuram. A season ago, then definately, but to be honest with you, I think he has passed his prime.

Furthermore last season, the board made it clear that they would not make big money moves for players over the age of 28 - hence the failure to lure Thuram & Lizarazu to OT. I dont see that policy changing this season and for once I actually agree with them.

I would much rather them spend £35 on Nesta or Rio who are both in their twenties and more importantly haven't reached their peaks yet, than on Thuram who is not at the level of performance that he was at 1/2yrs ago.

He's a better right back than he is a central defender anyway. It doesn't make sense to pay that amount for him and then stick him at CB because that's where he wants to play rather than that's where he plays better.

From Rednews:

Thuram's agent;
"I think that, in a short time, there will be a board meeting of United's plc and, after that, I think something can happen. I know that he is one of the targets of the club but there is nothing at
the moment other than rumours
. He could be a massive investment because the transfer price is very high - would think between £20-£25 million - and also the salary of the player. He signed a five-year contract last season and I think he's happy to stay with Juventus but then he would not be leaving for a medium club - it's United."

Thuram is a bad investment, too old and too expensive. As others have stated, we need a younger more long term natural central defender like Rio and Nesta.

I can't see the tight arsed board sanctioning a £20M+ deal for a 30-year-old. No way in hell.....

Well, it's been reported that the price has dropped to 27.7 million Euros, for a 4 year contract. Thuram will get about 4.7 million a season.

i stress again ... pls pls no thuram ... lets hope that arse is getting him rather than man utd... pls spend the money in bettter quality players

Look... Thuram IS quality.
This time last year all United fans wanted him to join. The only difference now is that he's a year older. That's the only thing that really puts me off.
It would have made a lot more sense to have signed him last year than Blanc - but that's not the way things worked out.
Perhaps some people don't want him because he's been linked for so long? An old name equals no extra excitement?
I still feel someone younger would be more suited, but IF it's going to be Thuram, then he IS better than any defender we have currently...

Well said - he might not be THE best defender in the world but he is ONE of the best defenders in the world and would be a big improvement, and besides, he might not be the only defender we get.

Given his performance in the WC & the almost Universal agreement that we a need rock in the centre is he really the answer?

Of course he won't - we've got rid of three defenders, so we'll bring in more than one.

Not many folk seem to have recognised that. Its probably 4 now and could be 5, if you include Wallwork, May and Blanc.

Thuram performance at the WC can be very misleading. Other great players have not performed well ie. Figo, Rui Costa, Trazequet, Viera, Crespo etc. No one can say these are bad players, in fact all are good enough for Utd. And yes, Thuram like the others were not injury free if you'd follwed the news, you'ld know this.
Having followed him for the past 3-4 years since Parma, he is really a world class defender. A few matches in the FarEast where it was hot, humid, and where the games often were played very tight and at lower tempo, just doesn't change my believe about his quality.
He may be 30, but just take a look at Sheringham, Di Canio, Maldini etc. Nowadays, players who keep themselves fit can play their best football well into the mid 30s. To me, 3-4yrs of solid defending from a technically brilliant defender is well worth the 18-19mill. And like some of you have said, I think we will be getting about 3 defenders this summer anyway. Thuram is just a beginning, and a very decent one imo.

Thruam can't be put in the same list as the Vierra's. He never played as many games and came in to the World Cup at the top of his game. Being beaten for pace has little to do with how good a defender he is. It just show his faculties have slowed. Blanc is probablly the slowest in the Prem but have you ever seen him caught for pace?

1. Thuram was caught for pace against
Senegal. He was too far up when he lost the ball and to slow to track back. result: Diouf dragged the hapless LeBoeuf wide and the rest is history.
2. If Thuram is so good explain to us how four French defenders could not deal with a lone striker called El Hadj Diouf.
3. He was at fault for both the Danisdh goals. Caught for pace for one and out of postion with the other. Candella had a marvelous game on the right against the Danes. It was never him at fault.
4. Who here remembers how Munitis made Thuram look like Xavier at Euro 2000? The prem has many better players who can do a similar job. Yet none of them have done the same to the sluggish Blanc.
5. Conclusion. Thuram is not worth the risk

THURAM IS MORE PAST IT THAN STAM EVER WAS.

i really hope fergie is using thuram as a smoke screen for someone like nesta or tudor.

thuram no way, please!!!!!

I think Thuram is our most likely CB at the moment, Fergie loves him so much (aka Blanc) that he wont give up and he will probably pay over the odds.

I dont think Thuram gives us what we need, what are his qualities as a CB? Is he an organiser? Cant speak English can he? Is he great in the air? Great at reading the game? Great at tackling?

As for our board not signing older players, we've recently tried it on with Blanc, Thuram, Desailly, Di Canio.

What worries me is that they are ALL older players - it seems Fergie is trying to get all those he missed out on earlier.

Hush! The fanatics here will crucify you for daring to question Fergie's transfer policies!
