Television Tho Prop Grops Throps

He was trending number 1 most of yesterday & still number 1 this morning.

Makes Roman look stupid haha

I think that's to be expected, though. It's a big moment for AEW; a legitimate superstar in a previous era unretiring and giving the company more legitimacy.

The question is whether he'd still be garnering more views than Roman Reigns a few months from now.

Punk said what he needed to about WWE. He shouldn’t mention them again now (referencing things he did in WWE is obviously fine, but he shouldn’t use slandering them for cheap pops anymore, he’s better than that).

I can already tell that WWE vs AEW fans are going to ruin this though. Why compare them? Just watch both, or just watch one, or watch neither. The fans constant bitching and whining (on both sides) is the worst thing about wrestling currently, and that includes RAW.

Yea woke up for that and it started the show. Cheers for that Tony back to sleep now.

Was awesome. I think there's meant to be another big debut tonight but no doubt that's carnie bullshit to keep viewers watching the entire episode rather than clocking out.

Will happily be wrong tomorrow morning mind.
Predictable.

The question is whether there is a need to reference WWE (if you're an AEW talent) or AEW (if you're a WWE talent).

People reference the old X Pac promo when he crossed over in 1998, but even that was a waste of time and I don't know that anyone can provide proof that it helped sell tickets or bring in more viewers. If there's no feud to build (because the people you are referencing are in a different promotion), then all this does is waste TV time that you would otherwise be spending furthering your own storylines.

Looked amazing this feels like a moment that will be remembered for a long time

The stories about the limited shirt are crazy fans spent the whole night queuing up and missed the show

Not even a punk fan and I got goosebumps. Anything to make better competition I am for, AEW are serious and WWE need to sort their lives out.

Great to see Punk back. He should be great at giving AEW even more exposure and getting over some of their younger talent. I don't watch AEW other than the odd clip or YT vid but I think Punk and Darby Allin will be very entertaining.

Also, Darby's face-paint last night was very cool.

Yeah that was crazy.

I loved the ice cream idea too.

I hope AEW now focus on themselves & jot try to copy of take shots at WWE.

Just pretend they don't exist and build a solid product that makes you want to go back for more.

Moaning about wrestlers directly mentioning or alluding to WWE is like criticising other politicians for referencing the Tories. What are people supposed to do? Pretend that a near monopoly on power in a particular area/sector doesn’t exist?

It’s a bit rich when WWE essentially kamikazed their most beloved wrestling brand to try and stop AEW getting out of the starting blocks.

Part of me thinks AEW should have gone big before the show/ this whole week on Punk showing up (yeah lots of explicit hints, but they could have just outright stated it) might have pulled in on lot of casuals to the show... But then now those casuals will just tune in on Wednesday instead now you'd assume, which is probably better?

I'm not sure I follow the logic in this post. Nobody is pretending that professional wrestling isn't what's effectively a monopoly. Even if that were the case, I'm not sure what concentration of power in professional wrestling has to do with talent in WWE referencing talent in AEW, or vice versa.

My point was that it doesn't serve a purpose. You can't cash in on a feud that isn't going to materialize, and as such, it's a waste of time.

do casuals give a feck about cm punk?

do casuals give a feck about cm punk?

History has show us that they don't. In the apogee of his popularity, he was getting deafening roars but the PPV buyrates were desultory, at best. He is extremely popular among the hardcore fanbase; the question is what percentage of the overall fanbase that would comprise. Or whether he is more appealing to the casuals at this point in time than he was in his prime (and there's no reason to think that he is, or would be).

The casuals and jaded wrestling fan? Yes, least at first
Saw with his pipe bomb promo and his UFC debut that the next ppv was a big success

Of course him losing UFC debut didn't help his next match as all intrigue went
And then Cena/punk becoming about hhh as ref didn't help summerslam

They did the right thing imo. You either do punk videos to lead to the event early or you keep it as a hinted surprise like they did. Lead to anticipation without ruining the surprise element fully

That's genuinely a terrible take.

Not going to deny AEW has pulled of a big one here. Yesterday night was a roaring success for them. I have never seen anyone from wrestling trend like this in a long time. Now AEW has to be smart and make a good product so that many causal viewers also tune in.

One feud I really want to see would be Punk vs. MJF. For the sake of wrestling business I hope AEW does well.

That crowd reaction was deafening. I don't care about him mentioning WWE. It's the reason he left wrestling, he obviously had to address it.

If WWE champions are measured by their PPV buyrates, then nobody has done anything for over a decade.

Really the timeframe from Punk’s pipebomb promo to his loss to The Rock nearly two years later is a great microcosm for why so many people drifted away from watching WWE: terrible booking, hot acts completely misused, titles devalued and gimmick matches rendered meaningless. Punk was booked to be a midcard world champion, hardly seeing a PPV main event unless he was facing John Cena – and it wasn’t because there were hot world title programmes on the other brand. During his title run, Cena main evented over Punk in singles matches against Kane, Big Show and JOHN LAURINAITIS, and even had two matches for a title shot in the PPV main event over the championship match! It was an utterly miserably booked title reign.

I agree that he had to mention it. I just hope that’s it now. Let sleeping dogs lie and all that. Be CM Punk, not ex-WWE champion CM Punk.

Fact half the trending topics last night are Vince, Roman, HHH or WWE tells me all I need to know. Vince is such a narcissist he'll probably see his name trending at this like 'well they'll all watch Sunday now'.

The Big question tonight is, will Sasha show up or not?

You’re the only person I’ve seen suggest that she won’t  and since the match was still being advertised on SD last night, I’d be really surprised if she isn’t there

It's been a big story all week.

Neither Sasha or Belair were at any events during the week and Sasha did not travel yesterday.

There was a statement saying "both had been cleared to wrestle, unless something unforeseen happens, then the match should go ahead".

Was also a suggestion, WWE could bring in Becky Lynch early if Sasha doesn't wrestle.

Yup, mentioned this previously. And add to the fact that before he became champ they had him lose to HHH for no reason except ego. And for some reason wanted to make Truth and Miz look like a scary thing that causes people to go on strike. And vinces obsession with trying to make Del Rio a star despite having one handed to him with Punk.

That really felt like something. Play it properly and it can be a big boost for them. It was 15,000 for a tv show, trending and all that with a reaction you hardly see in the past 7 or 8 years. Thought the promo was pretty good and calling out Darby Allin, picking a new guy to introduce to the people watching for the first time, was very smart. Though I have to say Punk looked old, those bags. Also did anyone else think the audio sounded a bit shit. Was that just a one off or is this an AEW thing. Whenever I watch clips production can seem ropey at times, would have thought they've ironed that stuff out almost 2 years in.

It is a good product though. Its been a good product for a long long time. What about it hasnt been good in your opinion?
I meant going forward to attract causal viewers as well. Not been watching wrestling be it wwe or Aew on regular basis so don't know if it's good or bad. But this is a turning point for them so they better capitalize for the good of wrestling.

Did you miss the whole NWO invasion of The Outsiders, former WWE guys coming in and taking over?

Was a great reception.

The actual wrestling that followed it though couldn't live up to the event. The tag team match immediately after shows the weaknesses are still there.

Fair. Are you going to watch going forward?

Regarding AEW, their storylines and wrestling overall have been really strong. Hopefully it gets more eyeballs as a result.

I will definitely watch the all out PPV. I consistently was into MJF jericho initial feud and absolutely loved it. Really looking forward to see MJF and Punk interact.
