The Mirror says United are keeping tabs on Athletic Bilbao teenagers Javi Martinez and Markel Susaeta. The 19-year-old midfielder are Spain U21 internationals, with Martinez said to be valued at £15million. According to the paper, the Reds are also interested in Sporting Lisbon playmaker Miguel Veloso.

United can rule the world. That's what Sir Alex has told his young players, apparently. "The last time we had a youthful squad like this, back in 1999, we won the Treble," he told The Sun.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keeping tabs on Atletico Bilbao 19-year-olds Javi Martinez and Markel Susaeta.

Both are Spanish Under-21 midfielders and Martinez is valued at £15m by Bilbao, who have him tied up until 2012.

Martinez said: "I have been surprised to hear about United, but it is a compliment to me and praise for my work."

Sporting Lisbon playmaker Miguel Veloso has also caught United's eye.

Expect the Dippers will be challenging us for their signatures tomorrow ,,,

Both fantastic young players. Saw them a few times this season. Susaeta has got a deadly free kick aswell.

I would have thought these midfielder rumours would have stopped at the start of the season when our midfield options increased to about 8 different players.

Manchester United Line Up Move for £18m Rated “New Xabi Alonso”: Old Trafford Boss Keen On Javi Martinez

Manchester United are apparently setting their sights on talented young midfielder Javi Martinez. Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to bring in new central midfield options and has earmarked a move for the promising Spanish Under 21 international who has been likened to a young Xabi Alonso.

The towering Atletico Bilbao man has been targeted by many of Europe’s elite after impressing many with his mature performances in La Liga and after four seasons in the Bilbao first team he appears ready to make a move up the footballing ladder. Many had predicted Martinez would move to either Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid but neither side has made a concrete offer as yet.

Old Trafford boss Ferguson is known to be an admirer of the battling midfielder and may well be ready to meet the Basque clubs valuation of around £18m for the 21 year old.

Muppet frenzy on all fronts at the moment....'We're getting Martinez!', 'We're getting Krasic!', 'We're getting Milner!'....despite SAF stating that we might sign one more or even no more players

He's nothing like Xabi.

Maybe not. On the other hand he is nothing like Iniesta or Xavi either, so the journo must have had some dilemma there. :)

He is probably more box-to-box, and I cant see that he possess Xabis passing abilities, but like Xabi he is excellent in the "repossession" part of the game. Maybe you could compare him to a modern day Robson? That is, a Robson with a dash of Xabi? As a type of player, that is.

We seem to be monitoring, keeping tabs on, watching, following the progress of or scouting about 30 different players at the moment.

We are apparently on the verge of bidding for about 15 of these 30.

We just cannot buy them all.

Looking forward though to the one player that Fergie may buy.

He's a Basque midfielder who has been playing first team football as a teen. And he's more defensive than offensive. So there's the comparison with Alonso.

Unlike Alonso however he's just "quite good" on the ball, plays it around fine and is a danger from set pieces scoring with headers.
