What is the worst deal United has ever made?

Who's the worst player we ever sunk our greedy teeth into, and couldn't spit out 'till we vommited?

:o

Well, I think it's too early yet to state Veron, but he has a GREAT chance...

No, not him. But there was a player we bought rather expensively at the eighties from Forest. I think he as striker or the sorts. And he was bearded. Does anyone know his name?

Spot on! In my memory anyway. He was a goal machine at Forest, we paid a shitload for him and he was utter pony.

I had to think twice about it as we had Peter Davenport from Forest a few years earlier and he was almost as bad, it was the beard that gave it away.

We had Davenport after Birtles

Does anybody remember Ralph Milne?
He was free, but he's the worst thing I ever saw in a United shirt

coulda , shouda , didn't - birtles - bar none.

Davenport was shite, but scored a last minute winner aginst the scousers at OT in 1987, so Birtles wins the award ;)

Nah, I dispute that, the worst player United ever had in the time that I was going has got to be Tommy Jackson...

The only sunday league class player to play for United...

And he wasn't even a good sunday league player... ...

How about Alan Brazil? he played for us and knew he was so crap that he threw up before each game!

veron was not a worst deal but a played style revolutions to Manchester United. Altough no silverware last season, but I believed our team were getting stronger. We'll see about that when the new season starts. But must watchout for the team like Arsenal & Liverpool. As for Arsenal, they got a half team of France International player, and Liverpool...they always playing the defensive shit game with MU. I really need to see our team to beat them with big scored. With the strong defense, attack & the strongest midfield, it just some settlement of strategies adjustment needed to achive.

Ralph was so poor he got cult status though, so it can't be him.

Birtles certainly takes some beating, but Alan Brazil was equally as shite imo. Davenport scored regularly against the Scousers so that counts him out.

May not be the worst, but Jordi Cruff worths a mention here.

I don't think he ever got a good enough run myself. He could have been good in "the hole" I reckon.

We didn't sign him (not from an English club anyway) so it doesn't really count but what about Paddy Roche?...

But then again (to show that the unbelievable can happen) his save from Cyril Regis at Old Trafford in a cup tie with West Brom was right up there with Banks from Pele...

The most memorable thing about Paddy was the gloves he used to wear. It looked like he had a bunch of bananas in each hand, come to think of it, that could explain why he never caught anything. Talking goalkeepers, Jim Leighton has to be worth a mention. Now, who was that centre half Tommy Doc signed from Burnley(?) on a free????

Colin Waldron? I think

His only saving grace was that he was free ;) but he never really got a fair crack of the whip with only 4 games under his belt. Players like him, Taibi, Prunier etc crop up on peoples lists but were never really given the chance to show just how bad they were.

It must still go to the likes of Birtles, Milne, Davenport, Brazil et al who managed to consistantly prove just how crap they were.

Three of the worst ones were all from Forest.

They must have laughing their balls off in Nottingham.

Gary Birtles
Peter Davenport
Neil Webb

Three proper donkeys anyone know how much we paid for them?

£1.25M for Birtles
£570k for Davenport
and £1.5M for Webb

We got our own back when we signed Keano for £3.75M though

for those slightly older, ian ure has to be there

Red Days. Happy Days. Enjoy

I vote David May......Keep hearing him being around (reserve team , interviews, celebrating in 1999 for CL win etc) but never see him play (for long).....must be damn difficult to get him to leave...

Eric Cantona.

Well was that a good deal for Leeds????

It has to be Rio Ferdinand if you ask me. I mean 30m and he still has done nothing in a United shirt.......!

Gary Birtles - he was brilliant under Cloughie helping Forest win the EC.

He played twice. Once at OT against QPR (I think!) And then he played against Spurs in a 4-1 defeat.

Webb wasnt that bad, he could pass at least and if i remember rightly at that time you had to have a mostly english team to play in europe so that had a big influence on whom we brought in...

There was nothing wrong with ashley grimes; how was he supposed to force his way into the team with Steve Coppell playing brilliantly week in week out? he was a decent sub imo.

The worst deal we ever made was Birtles.

The worst non deal we ever didnt make was not buying ferdinand or some other top notch defender last season; dont be surprised if we lose 6 games this season; new defenders take time to settle.

Prunier wanst that bad from what i saw. i remember he just about headed in a goal on his debut, andy cole being the poacher he is managed to get a toe end on it just before it crossed the line so prunier was robbed of his goal. reminded me of Stam a bit (big 'n' bald).

I reckon putting David May up there with the worst ever deals is plain unfair.

He did the business for us until he had a succession of injuries. You must have a short memory or never have seen David in action whether in person or on telly or video if you think he deserves such a label. He scored some bloody useful goals from time to time.

However, I have to agree with those who accused David of milking his minimal contribution to the Treble Year. I also was not partiucularly impressed by the way he was so pushy at Barcelona - being one of the first to go up for his medal despite not being one of the players who slogged it out in that game. It still does not look right to me on the video when I watch it.
