Anyone a fan of the HBO show, the fifth and final season starts in January saw a trailer its looks good.

Just watched the first episode of the first season, looks promising.

What up, just wanted to tell everyone who has Comcast OnDemand that there is a sneak peek of the season 5 premiere, it was awesome, this season is gonna be incredible

Watched the first two series on dvd recently and really enjoyed them, also got The Shield series 3 & 4 to watch which was another great show.

The first 2 episodes of season 5 are online, as well as the 5th and the 7th, having watched the first two let me say McNulty is a magnificent bastard.

Since this post, I have now watched all four seasons twice, and now I've started the first season again.

Saw the first two episodes of the first series the other day. It's a strange combination of rubbish and brilliant.

The writing's pretty terrible, on the micro scale... virtually every scene is one character pulling rank on another, be it cop to cop, gangsta to gansta, cop to gangsta or whatever. "Goddammit, MacNulty, you've fecked up"... it's like a Fry and Laurie parody. In the first episode, MacNulty tells a judge something he shouldn’t – we see this, and are then told it about 8 more times, “MacNulty told some goddamned judge...”, “MacNulty, what the goddamn feck are you doing? The Chief just told me you shot your mouth off to some goddamned judge...” That’s just rubbish. And as for the gangstas, they’re so obviously written by a white guy it’s not true. Every expression they use has been lifted off a Snoop record. Nigga please.

On the other hand, the story’s totally compelling, so I’m clearly going to end up watching the whole lot.

"Goddammit, I just got a call from MacNulty. He told me the DA hauled his Irish ass over the goddamn coals. What happened was, MacNulty went to see this goddamned judge, and he told the motherfecker that ten murders been committed..." WE feckING SAW IT HAPPEN YOU cnut

Just to add Charlie Brooker's 2 cents worth...

And I think Pletch in being unfairly harsh on it, as there is so much properly shite TV being made world over that does deserve criticism, but this show is class.

My friend is a gangsta in Baltimore and he said it is just like that. We schooled together in Harrow so I trust his judgement.

Those two things you said don't go together, all gang members in Baltimore are home grown or at least East Coast, yeah its a big shit hole though and has been for sometime. You learn on the streets how to become a gangsta not at Harrow Prep School

To be fair I only saw the first two or three episodes, it may be that they're a bit clunkier cos they have a lot to set up.

Looking at that clip mind, I still think the actual dialogue is fairly cliche-ridden cop-show fare - "So what can I tell ya? This case doesn't fall, we're all gonna be steppin' on our dicks here tryin' to explain what happened" - almost to the point of parody. Same with at least some of the characters - the dashingly clever but politically naive cop who cuts corners and pisses his chief off was already cliched in 1974, when it was parodied in the film Network.

But, it sort of doesn't matter about any of this stuff, because the story's so good and it's so well-made.

As I predicted Avon Barksdale, still looks a major player even behind bars

For me i think the last season (4) was as good a series of drama as i`ve ever seen, and it`s criminal that it isn`t a flagship show on Ch 4 or BBC 2.

Yeh.

Quite tricky to follow though. If you miss an episode or dont concentrate you can completely lose the thread of the plot.

But only because it doesnt patronise, which really sets it apart from most (particularly US) television IMO. It's like a novel.

"NO DOUBT"- Best programme (that should be) on tv
