The Striker Issue

After watching tonights match, one of the things that was apparent to me was the fact that we could do with and indeed need another striker or goal threat as it were. Since dwight left, there has been speculation about di canio, crespo, luque, zlatlan to name but a few, but nothing is seemingly concrete and more worryingly no wheels look to be in motion over a possible deal to bring in a striker before this bloody transfer deadline.

We in my opinion cannot afford to go into the season (league & Champions league) with only 3 strikers, if so i think we will shoot ourselves in the foot and be making a major mistake.

What are opinions in general and who is the most likely import into the club on this front, given the circumstances - someone on MUTV today mentioned Enrico Chiesa from Fiorentina, we could get him on a free/one year loan and he is a quality striker, but he has just had a very bad injury???risky???

Surely tonights performance can't be linked to not having a 4th striker. We had all our strikers out there today and couldn't still couldn't poke one in. :o

Indeed, my rational being that we could do with more inspiration up front - what we need in our side is a 'magic-maker' as I call them, a Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Duff etc. A player that in a situation like tonight can provide that moment of spark to create something from nothing, essentially the reason why Veron was in my opinion bought (although in my opinion he is not that sort of player)

We could do with that sort of inspiration or alternative up front in our side, the question is who and at what cost?

Tonite proved the need for a fourth striker. United's starting eleven were playing without inspiration during the early stages of the second half. It is at that point that SAF looked at his bench and saw NOTHING. Man United need someone to come on in the second half to give the team a kick up the ass. I don't know who that is, maybe Duff, maybe Eidur, but we need to find out, and quick. -Ben

which one of these names DOESN'T belong???

I was about to say the exact same thing.....
Which ine has yet to show real CLASS

Hey saw Cantona playing beach footie, if we can convice him to come back we'd be all set. I mean if Larry is still playing..... ;)

There is a need for 4th striker alright but just can't see this happening in the short term. :(

We have 3 strikers, 2 who can score and 1 who cant (not yet anyway) but when one of the strikers who can score is taken off and Giggs plays through the middle (got to be good for 5-8 goals a season!) we really dont have the strength in depth that we used to have or that we need if we want to compete on all fronts.

Giggs will get us at least 12 maybe 15 goals next year, I just hope Veron, Scholes and Becks can get another 20-30 in total.

It's not about strikers, it's about unlocking defences, turning the game around. A striker doesn't do that if he doesn't get the ball!

Ronaldinho is probably too expensive right now, Duff then. Either will do and quick!

It's not about panic buying, it's just that we have confirmed that there is no reason to believe this season will be any different from last. They just seem to have strolled through the Summer keeping the exact same mindset. A little shakeup/kick up the arse is due and either option can do that with most FT regulars.

my thought exactly ;)

It's funny how Duff has risen to superstar status since we were linked to him...

To be fair Blythy all the pundits raved about him during the WC, he was one of the stars of the Cup, and it was Souness who started talking about £20m value on him, and no paper has argued against it. Duff is a great talent, because that kind of dribbling skill is so rare.

Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Zidane we won't get so it makes sense to include a realistic choice, doesn't it? Proven World Class or not, I'm sure Giggs would get his arse going.

We already needed a 4th striker - even if we'd won by a hatful last night, that would still be the case.

But how different everyone's opinions would be today if that shot in the first few minutes hadn't hit the upright.

If that had gone in, and we'd still played in such a clueless lacklustre fashion I still wouldn't be happy. Chelsea will murder us if we play like that.

Ronaldinho is definately the player that we could do with. The reality of that happening given:

Ferdinand: £30m
Veron: £28.1m
Van Nistelrooy: £19m

But I personally believe that Ronaldinho would be the final piece of the attacking puzzle in our team, he would provide that inspiration that we could and indeed desperately need, the type of "spark" that Giggs on his day can perform.

But like I say the chances of that happening are slim to none, indeed there would have to be a major exit before any such deal could be done for Ronaldinho, and with time running out to that deadline day, I really can't see that happening. And with Brown now out, Barthez still injured along with Gary Neville, there is now obvious emphasis on the left/right back positions, so who knows what will happen with the striker position.

Well I'd be happy that we got an away goal - but I know what you mean. I've always said that imo the performance is more important than the result. I'd far rather watch a good United lose, than a bad United win, although you accept that on occasions, it's important to just "grind out a result" as they say. As long as that doesn't become the norm.

Is Ronaldhino still available?

Good post, after all we are United fans and the style of play is part of our heritage although as you say, the mark of champions is winning even when you're not playing well, which we didn't manage last season because of the defense. On Ronaldinho, I don't think he ever was available, he said he wanted to honour his long contract as PSG and was very happy and settled there. Fair play to him, he'd be great to have, but I think it'll be some time before he moves.

Actually there may be a way we can get Ronaldinho, but it might be a bit expensive...

French First Division side Paris St Germain are to be put up for sale, according to reports. The move follows the break-up of the club's owners Canal Plus, the French pay-television group.
The break-up has been imposed by parent company Vivendi Universal, who are concerned at the crushing debts incurred by the French-American media giant. Canal Plus own 91% of PSG, France's most glamorous club which it bought in 1991, and whose current playing staff include Brazilian World Cup star Ronaldinho. It is now believed the club are on the list of assets to be sold, provided a buyer can be found. Michel Denisot, sporting director of Canal Plus, has already confirmed the possibility of a separation from PSG. "A statement of the assets has been made, which clearly indicates we can live without PSG, or by selling part of it," he said. PSG was founded in 1973 through a merger of two smaller teams in an attempt to give Paris a club to be proud of when the Parc des Princes stadium was rebuilt. But they only made a significant impact on the European stage in the mid-1990s, winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1996. PSG have not won the French title since 1994 despite a heavy outlay on players in recent years. They could only finish fourth last season, missing out on a lucrative Champions League place. Despite the current financial constraints, coach Luis Fernandez confirmed this week that Ronaldinho would be staying in Paris.

Is that all you can say ? Why cant Giggs get 12+ goals this season, especially if he is played further upfield as a Striker. No reason why not. Argue your point instead of being a prat.
