U/18's
United defeated Stoke City 2-0 at Carrington this morning. In wet, cold conditions, the young reds put in a very good performance and were well worth their victory. Goals by Christy Fagan and Febian Brandy were enough to wrap up the points. Tom Cleverley had another good game.McCormack moved to right back and Richard Eckersley moved into the middle.
Team: Amos, Eckersley, Cleverley, Chester, Cathcart, Drinkwater, Derbyshire, Hewson, Brandy, Fagan, Galbraith
Subs: Bryan (9), McCormack (5).....no other subs
Scorers: Fagan, Brandy
U/16's
The United junior team had a convincing 4-0 victory over Stoke on the opposite pitch. United had all the play and should have been three or four nil up by half-time.....instead all they had to show was a rasping drive by Dave Williams from outide the box. It was a great strike and gave United a deserved lead.
In the second half United had Stoke pinned in their own half for most of the game.....Dave Williams made it 2-0 when he latched on to a poor backpass in the box and beat two players before giving the keeper no chance from eight yards......he then wrapped up his hat-trick as he ran on to a through ball and easily beat the keeper. Mark Dempsey made numerous changes but United still maintained control and an Oliver Norwood penalty finished the scoring. Matthew James was outstanding in midfield and Dave Williams looked lively up front.
Team: Filler, Stewart, Dudgeon, Gill, Strickland, Norwood, Ajose, James, Williams, Bryant, Farrelly
Subs: Potts (6), Bulmer (1), Longworth (5), Brown (2), Lampkin (7)
Later subs: Stewart (11), Norwood (8), Ajose (9)
Scorers: Williams 3, Norwood (pen)
Apparently decisions about the U/16's contracts were made yesterday and the parents expect to receive letters next week advising whether or not scholarships will be offered.....
I spoke with Evando Brandao who told me that he will stay in Birmingham to finish his school year and then move to Manchester in the summer. Meanwhile he will play the odd game for the 16's as the season progresses....
Gary Woods aggravated his ankle injury playing for his school but should be back in action in the next 2/3 weeks...
United will not be entering the Blue Stars Tournament in May as the United u-18 team is felt to be too young/inexperienced to participate in what in reality is a u-20 competition...remember...lads like Galbraith and Eikrem have only turned 16!
Finally, due to Liverpool's FA Youth Cup commitments v Chelsea.....both Academy matches against Liverpool due to played next weekend have been postponed.
