Just finished watching every episode, and I'm just wondering, Am I the only person in the world who, by the end of it, hated every single character remaining, or at the very least, didnt really care about them?
Take the family, Carmela was a money-grabbing, pseudo-religious bitch, Tony was a hypocritical sociopath, Janice was a bitch, Meadow was...meh, AJ was insignificant.
Then get into the wider family - Sil was a prick, Paulie was, as he famously says, "a malignant cnut" - when he disowned his own mother, he really went down in my estimation, Bobby's transformation into a cnut was IMHO, repulsive and unrealistic.

The only characters who you could have some understanding/sympathy for were, Christopher, Junior, and Adriana. And surprise, surprise, they were all bumped off/put into an asylum...

I think it was part of why it was such a brilliant show... there were no heroes.

That's just how it is. People like that exist, they're horrible people.

You could say Meadow was the only one that was likely to make something of herself but the evilness of the 'family' was always going to be around her.

My Mrs. family are from Jersey and have been on the wrong end of people like that. Nothing deadly but they did basically lose their business through some bad choices they made.

I miss that show, I hope they don't spoil it with a movie though.

The only real hero in the whole show was Adriana. And RR Junior is still around at the end.

That said how can you not like Paulie Walnuts

Him offing his ma's mate was a bit rough but I know what you mean.

The last season especially I really disliked Tony (what he did to Chris really suprised me).

I did not hate Furio or Junior, Adrianna was great as well.

Loved the show.

Wish it carried on forever.

I found myself wanting to wack somebody

Yeah whenever I watch a few episodes again, I find that the word 'muthafecka' becomes part of my regular vocabulary

I miss Rome too

Generation Kill is fecking good though.... I wonder how it's going to end, I love a happy ending

Generation Kill is class, no doubts about Rome either great acting

My nephew just graduated from Parris Island last friday, I've been recording it for him... let him see what he's let himself in for.

Yeah, thats why I added the "/put in asylum" bit to it..

Didnt you think Paulie was knob, just for the fact that he treated his own mother and aunt like shit, for something that they did FOR him? imagine a bastard child growing up in a conservative household like that, he'd have turned into Vito!

And then on top of that, it was Paulie's verbal tirade against Chris and his daughter which led him to drink and drugs for the last time...

Forgot about Furio, yeah, he was decent. Junior was a prick at the start, but gradually, you could see the warmth of the character...

Chris was still undeniably the best of the lot IMHO...

Tbf Chris did push Paulie's nephew out of a 3rd story window, had it been someone else Paulie would have killed them. Also, I think Chris was doing drugs the whole time, after Adriana was killed he was completely haunted by her death. The thing I like about Paulie was his longetivity, superstitions, and general demeanor(yeah the stuff with his mother and aunt was bad, but they reconciled and tbf he had been lied to for over 60 years that would piss a lot of people off). I mean Paulie was around when Tony;s pa was around and even when DiMeo was the boss, tbf he reminded me an awful lot of Uncle Junior before Junior lost it.

Don't get me wrong Chris(Michael Imperioli was excellent in the series) was my favorite character after Tony, but how could you feel sorry for him. He was a druggie, who beat his woman, and eventually had her killed. In the episode where she is killed at first Chris decides to go away with Adriana, but upon seeing a low class family and all the shit it entails while at a gas station, he does a u-turn choosing the lifestyle over Adriana.

There's an episode in season 5 where Tony has a big go at Janice at the dinner table. The scene where he keeps asking where her son (Harpo) is, "where is he having dinner tonight?". This is done after Janice has been taking some anger management classes and Tony is clearly just testing her patience. He just wants her to burst.
He was so MEAN in that scene, before that episode I still thought he was a bit cool despite all the shit he did, but in that scene he just came off as the big jerk he is..
But regardless, it is a great show!

Come on Janice was a total bitch in every way, she treated Tony bad when he was a child and he remembered it. Also she left the family and abandoned her son and only came back when Tony had regained Soprano prominence in NJ. Also she killed Richie Aprile her BF at the time, Tony's no angel, but he isnt a bitch like Janice was either. Janice only took anger managemnet classes because she had to after beating that other mom up(which I was fine with as she seemed a bitch herself)

I think Janice is a bitch yes, but there was just something about Tonys way of going against Janice's weakness that was very harsh. There's one thing when they have a go at eachother for their distructive personalities, illegal activites etc but the way he was going after her about her kid, when she was clearly trying to do better.. I just thought that was harsh. But yes, she is a total bitch.

I haven't watched season 6 yet, I'm on season 5 now.. and every character has something I can't stand. But there is one person I think is cool all the way and that is Silvio

The are some reasons for that as Alex pointed out but also Janice always talked a lot of shit about doing this and doing that and how she had completely changed. I think Tony was testing her just to see if she was talking shit as she usually does or did she for once in her life actually do what she said she had done.

Edit: Forgot about your silvio comment. Agree with it. Actually he deserves two more cool smilies. The guy's a pimped out g.:cool::cool:

That's the whole point. The characters are supposed to be good and bad, just like in real life.

BTW Christopher was a psycho, Junior (pre-senility) was a manipulative bastard and Adriana was a money grabber too.

For me it was a superb show. Quite possibly the best thing I have ever seen on TV.

Agree on the best show part and The Wire a close second.

As for the Characters, as someone mentioned already they are not supposed to be heroes. I still liked many of them anyway. Also I'd argue that someone like Bobby Baccala or Tony Blundetto were essentially nice people deep down too.

.

The only good characters I can think off are Andriana and Tony's daughter, and may be the shrink.

Janice was the MOST irritating character in the Sopranos. Meadows, I would have loved to have given her some meat. Carmela is a MILF and Adriana was HOT. Chris was a pompous self loving buffoon.

My favourite character alongside Paulie was Johnny Sack, soo cool and smooth PLUS the undying love for his FAT missus

Tony S was a WUM.
I've been watching some episodes lately also. After not watching the show for a few years, it's fresh again.
When a show is mesmorizing even though the characters are horrible people, then it's a great show. Kind of like watching Alex in a Clockwork Orange - a despicable character, but you ended up liking him. That is great writing.
As far as Rome goes,it could have one of the alltime greats if they would have had the money to continue it.

She wasn't fat, she just had a 100 pound mole on her backside

Top 5 quotes from 'The Sopranos'

Number 5
"Anybody else would've had their f***in' intervention right through the back of their head."
Who Said It: Tony, to a drug-addicted Christopher
Tony lets Christopher know how lucky he really is to be getting a plain old talking intervention about his drug use.

Number 4
"A, she was a whore. B, She hit me."
Who Said It: Ralphie, to Tony
Ralphie defends killing the Bada Bing stripper, only to have Tony hit him -- violating a taboo that no made man should ever hit another made man.

Number 3
Tony: "Uncle June, how was Boca?"
Junior: "Wonderful. I don't go down enough."
Carmela: "That's not what I heard."
Junior's shame about cunnilingus is outmatched by how amusing Carmela finds the whole situation.

Number 2
"My f***ing hand is stuck down the drain so I can not reach the f***ing phone."
Who Said It: Uncle Junior.
Junior pathetically gets his hand stuck in a drain and has to wait for hours for Bobby to show up, only for Bobby to stupidly ask why Junior didn't just call.

Number 1
"I can't find Pussy anywhere."
Who Said It: Tony, to Dr. Melfi.
Tony is starting to wonder where Pussy really is -- dead, turned by the FBI, etc. -- and none of the possibilities are good ones.
