The silver lining of finishing outside the European places

Of course, it would be a pathetic season. Unacceptably so. But we're on course for it. And we need major changes. Bar winning the Europa, it would mean a much lighter fixture load next season, which wouldn't require this bloated squad and allow us to really trim the squad over the summer. And there'd be plenty of time on the training pitch.

If we don't somehow qualify for the CL (even though we have no business playing against the top sides), I hope we're out of Europe altogether. I'd like to see at least 10 players moved on and us bringing in 3 serious players and 3-4 highly rated prospects.

Constantly qualifying for the Europa/CL allows us to stay in this vicious cycle of just slightly addressing squad building, instead of just really starting afresh.

Watch us worm our way into the conference league

There isn't one. It would be even more dire financially than it already is.

You don't need to be outside of European football to address problems. Chelsea had no European football last season and needed a fantastic run at the end of the season to scrape by a Conference League spot. They're doing well now after changing managers.

Our big mistake was to change managers in November. Sticking with Ruud would probably have us in a better position point wise now all things considered but since the change was made I think the expectations are none asides from playing for your life in the team.

Personally I'm thoroughly disappointed
This start is parallel to EtH's lowest lows.

Just don't get relegated, that's my very low bar for Amorim. I tend to agree that United need a season or two where they can solely focus on the league but the club needs the extra funds from european competitions and it effects how much they can send in transfers I believe.

There is no silver lining. Every season UTD don't make UCL is an automatic failure and embarrassment.

Maybe. I still look at that those teams in the Europa though and think it’s winnable if we play at our best. The pace isn’t the same as the premiership and if our preparation is on point we should go far in it.

I sort of see what you're trying to say here, but many of the things you hope to address by avoiding the extra games in Europe etc. could be impacted negatively by not being in Europe at all, I think.

Wouldn't it potentially be more difficult to attract players of the required caliber? Wouldn't our PSR situation be even more desperate with no Europe? Wouldn't other clubs be able to squeeze us further in the market if we're desperate sellers, and couldn't it risk impacting the current squad motivation even further, if the clubs prestige takes another hit by continuing this dismal form?

Not saying that EL or conference is a panacea or anything. And you're right in the sense that it would theoretically make it possible to focus on drilling in the system that they chose to bet on with Amorim. But I don' think it would necessarily be a net positive to have no European games at all.

I think he just needed a pre-season and a summer transfer window. Whoever decided we should have stuck with ETH back in June really fecked up (maybe it was Ashworth and he’s paid for the price for it).
