is anyone else as bemused by 1st versus 4th and 2nd versus 3rd as me?

it just means it's basically a bye to the final for the team in first with no real incentive to finish second for the others.

why isn't it 1st v 3rd and 2nd v 4th like everything else?

Eh....it's always like that in all the competitons, be it Tennis or Football.
I reckon SA , due to finish 4th, will do aussies in the semis anyway....

Why is it a bye to the final? The team finishing fourth can beat the team finishing first if they play well. If South Africa finish fourth they could give Australia a match and might even beat them.

By finishing second you could avoid Australia until the final.

Australia, New Zealand and Sri-Lanka have qualified.

South Africa play England tomorrow and the winner will most likely go through.

2 vs 4?

Why should the team who finishes second get an easier draw than the team who finishes first?

man, i really need to pay attention more.

makes no sense to me.
Basically the team that finishes top should get the easiest match which would be against the team finishing 4th.
My guess is you just dont want to play Australia again. :smirk:

I'd love to play the Aussies again.

We rise to them on the big occasion in ODI's, look at the last tournament.

Only problems are we have to beat SA, were playing shite, Aussies are playing great.

:nervous:

but that just renders 4th place pointless. all the little teams (and in ODIs we ARE a little team) scrap it out for fourth and then bang! the aussies!

why not just qualify 1st, 2nd and 3rd? winner out of 2nd v 3rd plays 1st in the final...save a bit of time.

on the other hand, if we beat SA today, we'll beat the aussies no problem so that's all moot anyhow :smirk:

arent you english tired of inventing sports only to be beaten by other nations?

Anything can happen in a one off match against Australia. If the pitch is right and you win the toss then anything can happen. Australia certainly aren't invincible and you of all people should know how a relatively crap cricket team can beat Australia . Gilchrist isn't the threat he is anymore, Hayden doesn't do well against swing bowlers who cramp him up and force him off the back, Clarke is weak when he first comes to the crease and with the exception of Ponting who is absolute class, the other batsman can be dismissed relatively easily. Bowling wise Tait is very wild and inconsistent and can be targeted, Bracken and McGrath are very good bowlers but if you see them out the part timers aren't as strong. AUSTRALIA ARE BEATABLE!

There are 2 teams who the Ausies fear , SA and NZ

SA on the day can be unstoppable, and NZ will just knaw away at them.
