It seems the major reason why United have been quiet on the transfer market is that they have been waiting for the Rio deal to materialise and to establish just how much they will have to fork out for him and how much will be left for other buys. If reports are to be believed they have already put in a 20m bid for Rio which was obviously rejected out of hand. It is to be hoped that another report stating that the original bid would not be improved upon is wrong as all that would have done is to embarrass Rio, who has obviously put his faith in our Plc coming up with the necessary funds to get him to OT. Unless something happens pretty well immediatley on this front, Rio will be off on the tour with Leeds and the deal put on the back burner until he returns. This is not what Fergie wants as he needs to have this settled so that he can consider bringing in others. Will the Rio bid then have to be abandoned ? This was probably what Leeds were trying to achieve by rejecting the transfer request and with the tour coming up, postponing further discussion on the deal, in the hope that United would go away and concentrate on soemone else. Meanwhile time is getting short and other players need to be considered. United cannot afford to wait long for the Rio deal to be concluded, if it can be at all. We need to put in a realistic bid immediately and conclude the deal.

Is it Boomer 2 or Nils Tommason in disguise?

If Leeds don't grant him a transfer request then why would they sell because we put a new bid in?

(as I pointed out in one of the other billion and one rio threads in the rio forum)

Leeds need to balance the books and it looks like the Boyer deal may be off

Rio has made his feelings quite clear . What club would want to keep a player who has stated that he would like to play for one of its bitterest rivals .

It will need an improved bid , and soon , otherwise the deal could flounder.

So Rio making his feelings quite clear isn't enough? It should be don't you think? Grimsdale is starting to look a right nob now.

Planetfootball quotes Rio's agent as saying that we have made another approach today!

No brainer - ignore

That planetfootball article:
EXCLUSIVE
RIO FERDINAND'S agent Pinhas Zahavi has told
planetfootball.com that he believes that Manchester United have made a new approach to Leeds United for their captain.
The Elland Road stopper had a transfer request rejected by Leeds on Wednesday morning and chairman Peter Ridsdale said he expected Ferdinand to abide by the remainig four years of his contract.
However, Zahavi has told planetfootball that there has been new contact between the rival clubs.
"I understand that Manchester United have already
approached Leeds, recently and again probably today," Zahavi said.
"We are not confident, but we are not, not confident about the outcome.
"It is simple, as you know he has handed in a transfer request and as much as we understand Leeds have rejected it, from outside that is the end of the story."
Zahavi also denied claims that Ferdinand has a clause in his contract that would allow him to move to another Premiership club next summer, but did admit that he could move abroad.
"He could move to a foreign club for £25 million," he added. "His contract stipulates that it is a foreign club. So that obviously does not include Manchester United."
