The problem with Giggs

I think the problem with Giggs is that he has not had any serious competition for quite a few seasons, it is the worst possible thing for a player to be guarenteed his place no matter how bad he performs.

I think if he is left on the bench for a while and replaced by a young player, e.g. Richardson it may well give him the kick up the backside that he deserves. Remember how Beckham responded in a similar situation last season.

it's a possibility.

however, my view is that he's trying to hard too keep himself injury-free.. everytime he used to take on defenders he would atleast pick up a tight hamstring.. it's overused IMO..

but i have no idea who makes the decision on whether he should run or not. it could be SAF.. it could be himself..

i am sure SAF would have let richardson have more runs by now if he didn't think Giggs was doing what was asked of him..

look at Gaz and Phil.. they were both dropped after the Shitty game.. giggs wasn't.

playing giggs right now is a gamble. he has, as is farely evident it seems, been somewhat inconsisstent....however like i said it is a gamble. to replace a player of his calabir, who can completely change the course of a game, for someone who isn't experienced is always going to be gamble...so since SAF, or anyone, never knows when giggs will shine, how can he be sure as when to drop him?

he's older and with age comes some changes. speed given as it's not a skill but a gift - it's hard to work on it , it's not like ball or shot skills. when it's gone (speed) it's gone.

Linford Cristie was faster than he ever at 36. He worked on it, so should Giggs. His ball skills should need very little work, they should be well programmed in at his age.

TBH I think its daft to slate Giggs when he is still the best left winger in the world, cut him some slack. Name any player who has been played to the best of there abilities every game for over 10 years ??

I hope Fergie can give Richardson more games, so that he can grow faster and put some pressure on Giggs. We can hardly worse than now, so there's no loss for us to try some other fringe players.

Give Giggsy some of what Linford had.

Got there before me..... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

I recall a Serie A mananger recently saying Giggs has been the best left-winger in Europe for the last 3 or 4 years.
Giggs is a special player, we all know this, a one of a kind almost, and his stock has always been very high in Europe. No wonder, because as we all know, Giggs up for it and in full flow on a European night at OT is a wonder to behold.
So what is the problem?
Too many Rolexs?...not quite the right seat in the latest sports car?...or not being pushed for his place?
For a player who has never really been pushed for a place in the side in almost 10 years and to have performed at the level he has consistently, it's a bit cheap to question his motivation.
Ryan has always given his all, season after season, and he has usually proved to be the player we have missed most when not fit.
Maybe Keano is right, teams do have a shelf life, but in whatever brave new world Fergie is thinking of fashioning for United in the next 5 years(?) Ryan Giggs will play his full part.
Ok, he may have not scored a Prem goal at OT for an age, but he still is perhaps the most coveted and respected midfield talent in Europe outside of ZZ top.
Form is temporary, class is permanent.
Ryan Giggs gets my vote as the greatest player ever to play for Manchester United Football Club. He has the class of George Best and Eric Cantona and he beats both with longevity and loyalty.
Ryan Giggs isn't the problem, its building a Man Utd
good enough for Ryan Giggs to flourish.

great post!

if i may add, i think Giggs is also playing too much out of position. his 3 runs in the WHU game all came from the center of the field.. i haven't seen him on the left side for ages. maybe that's the problem.

Personally i blame SAF for Giggsys woes, SAF is asking him to play as a support striker and even when he plays on the left he is either drifting in or playing from a more inside position. When he is in that role he is running out off space to beat people, its a lot more crowded in the centre there and he isnt getting the chance to run at people, this being his main skill he is being made look ordinary.

The system 4-4-1-1 system should in theory benefit wide players but its not, it seems to be restricting them, SAF should let Giggs do his thing and play wide.

Or put Giggs behond RVN, it works when he does it in the EPl, why not try and frighten Europe with it? They could do serious damage to Juve/DLC and we'll have Keano/Butt back by then so having a defensive midfield wouldn't be a problem.
