Would’ve been funny to see him try.
There’s quite a few interviews about Moyes identifying Fabregas and Bale as the ones to get, those were the players that felt like Manchester United players, and he repeatedly highlighted the importance of doing our outmost to bring them in, to the point of waiting until the very end of the window.
It wasn’t really Woodwards job to come up with transfer alternatives for the manager, the point was to attempt to sign whoever the manager wanted. It’s also the way Moyes works, to the point that he also likes to personally scout potential signings. He even did it towards the end of his stint at West Ham, he likes to see the players live before giving the ok to sign them. Nicely illustrated by him not jumping on the chance to sign Thiago as he didn’t know much about him, even though Fergie tried bringing in Thiago before he signed his professional contract at Barcelona, and he wanted to bring him to the club the summer Fergie retired and Thiago ended up going to Bayern.
Being realistic, what was Woodward actually supposed to do then. He had just walked into his new role, how was he supposed to know better than the manager and why would he attempt to bring in someone the manager didn’t really fancy?
Moyes wasn’t let down by Woodward, it was the other way around.
