The loan option

Given that we have spent big bucks on Rio and the next priority is a left fullback, there would be little money left for a fourth striker.

A fourth striker is all the more necessary as Forlan seems to be shifting towards a wing position and is untested in the EPL as a striker.

Next year we will know for sure where we are standing in that sense. Why not getting that extra player on loan?

Just an example that made me think of this: Morales, the Uruguayan striker who scored one, dived in the penalty and missed a sitter against Senegal (he is not bad though!). His agent wants to give him a run in a European team to generate interest for him and knows there won't be big bucks until next year.

He is offering him on a one year-loan for a fee of 200K which is an absolute bargain.

I don't mean to say it should be him but aren't there some decent loan alternatives to make ends meet this year?

What makes you say this? We have a serious lack of strikers already without moving Diego to some back up RM role. I can't see this happening at all. It seems to be an idea more born out of threads on the caf where people tend to get carried away with daft ideas like this ;)

Hey Ant. Did the Kaka move to Bayer fall through ? I can't believe no one in Europe has picked him up yet..

His skills are great for wing play. He played ther ein the WC and against Shelbourne. Even last year he seemed to be pulled back by SAF and not exactly used as a striker.

There's no reason why he couldn't be backup for the wings AND up front but it probably is too much responsibility to burden him with (just imagine you are a newcomer and have to make up for Beckham, Giggs or RVN being injured! ).

On the one hand, I would like him being played on a fairly regular basis so that he can realise his potential, on the other I fear for him being slated when having to make up for the absence of a World Class player.

Interestingly, City signed Vicente Vuoso this summer. Wonder if Diego had anything to do with it.

I have heard absolutely nothing about it. Kaka's team changed manager and I don't know what his plans are in that respect.

I do know last week AmBev (German beer company) got the image rights for him for 10 years, as they did with Ronaldo before. That would probably suggest his eventual transfer being affected by that, most definitely a German club being in the cards.

I thought that was a Yorkie speciality.

How do YOU know? ;)

If Becks is injured you don't have much of a choice. I think that's why SAF is testing him there.

one Uruguayan striker untested in the EPL is quite enough, thank you...

the loan is not a bad idea if we could get someone from a European league, trouble is, a European club would not be keen on loaning a player out, whom they feel Utd. aren't interested in making a permanent signing of, next season

btw, it's being reported that PSG are up for sale and worth around 70m - sounds like a good investment to me ;)

p.s. Anty, perhaps Morales doesn't pass the Rivaldo test? ;)

No he doesn't. He plays for Nacional and I absolutely hate the cnut! He has even been to jail for massive brawls he has started on the pitch itself! But then, he is a consistent scorer (which fits your arguments FOR).

I wasn't suggesting him in particular, I'm presenting his case as one we can extrapolate elements from (do notice, they don't necessarily apply to top European leagues):

-Many clubs/agents have held on to players waiting for the WC to push their values up.

-Many have done so even deferring the players transfer (sometimes unsettling the player himself, e.g. Riquelme) and even building up debt in advance of the post-WC Summer windfall.

-The transfer market is stagnant, they can't hold on to the player and need to put him up in the shop-window to keep or raise interest in a future transfer.

-It follows that some very appropriate backup players could be available for loan for not too much money.

This is short-term patch solution but, if we really want to stick to our money, it might make sense as all we are looking for is a backup.

Loan with an option to buy next Summer, why not?

Let's face it, everyone is in deep shit with WAGES so the loan option is a very real one if we don't want to make a huge outlay after Rio's 30m. We also have wage probs but all the players that left probably made enough room there (and we are much better at making money out of the player's image).

Mind you, the papers in Uruguay say Morales' agent is closing a deal for him with an English team.
