So, in a hypothetical situation, the Glazers actually gave SAF 50M to spend over the summer, and we are faced with the following situation of having to choose only 2 players to improve our first XI or improve our squad, whichever ways are priority to you.

Rules are:

i) you can only choose 1 player from each pot

ii) motivate why you made that decision

Remember guys, this is just hypothetical, so "value" and "availability" is not up for discussion. It will be interesting to see how our priorities differ, though I'm inclined to think a solid GK will be top of most peoples list.

Pot 1 (35M players):

Sneijder, De Gea (gk), Neuer (gk), Stekelenburg (gk), Modric, Sanchez, Pastore*, D Costa*, Bale, Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Aguero, Hazard*, Ribery.

Pot 2 (15M players):

Given (gk), Javi Martinez*, Henderson, Juan Mata, Banega, Schwarzer (gk), Mascherano, Diego Lopez (gk)*, Alex Song, Adam, Defour*, Matt Jarvis.

* = players I've personally not seen more than 20 times :(

Go....

Can we also have a hypothetical thread where every transfer suggest or rumoured will be met with responses of: "Bollocks. Will never happen" ?

You'll never make it as a valuer mate

I think you're over valuing your goalkeepers there.

And I don't fancy anyone in Pot 2 thanks.

As stated in the OP - the value is all hypothetical, as the purpose was just to see how our team priorities are seen by different posters. So I could have used monopoly values and ranked the players in pot 1 at $100 and pot 2 at $5.

There is no way Mata, Banega and Lopez would only go for 15m, and if they did then you wouldn't even have to think twice. Would improve us and in the areas we could do with.

I think you're missing a player who's almost certain to be a United player come the summer; Jack Rodwell. That's immediately 15-20m right there.

I was very tempted to put him in, but I wasn't too sure what "category". +-30M or 15-20M? As he's young and British. Luckily for us, he has not been setting the world on fire this season (has he ever?), so if we are interested I'd agree with your assessment.

This.

No way would De Gea be worth over 20 million.

Really, i thought the question of worth can only be determined by how much someone is willing to pay.

I would suggest Atletico value him at least at £20m, considering his young age and he could easily have another 15 years at the top.

The real issue is would Fergie agree with such a valuation?

Banega at £15 million, best deal since Hernandez

I'd forget the keeper and go with Lindegaard. Those just arent value for money

I don't think this thread has any value as a muppetry thread, unless you're allowed to wheel and deal a bit. My 'muppet-on' isn't even faintly stirring

And a City player. They might give us a player for about £50 million, but other than that

De Gea's buyout is €20M so he should not be in the pot 2.

Going off your two pots though I'd pick Neuer and Banega.

Ok, I'll play with your monopoly values and hypothetical jibber jabber.

United should only buy for the sake of improving the team or covering a need. United must have a top goalkeeper to replace VDS. That is the first priority in the summer. None of the keepers in Pot 2 could fill our need, so the Pot 1 pick must be a keeper. I'd pick Neuer.

We have Nani, Valencia, Giggs and Park on the wings. Juan Mata and Matt Jarvis, the only wingers in Pot 2, are not a substantial improvement on what we've got.

The seven remaining players in Pot 2 are all central midfielders. Which one to choose? Alex Song is too soft, Mascherano is too average, Martinez and Banega might not be suited to the Premiership.

That leaves three choices: Defour, Adam, or Henderson.

Defour is someone I've never seen, who is both young and unproven in the Premiership. If the club thinks he's a big enough talent, then I'd be happy with him.

Henderson is young, English, and proven in English football. However he's more impressive for his age than impressive in an absolute sense. I don't know how much he would add to our squad.

Adam is a proven difference maker in the Premier league, capable of sublime long passes and crosses, and possesses a goal-scoring touch. He would add something to United which we are in need of, and he would be a much more sure thing than the others.

So out of Pot 2 I pick Charlie Adam.

This time last year if you were reading the caf you would have been certain that Ozil, Di Maria and Hamsik were all definitely done deals so if we managed to get at least Ashley Young and Sketelenburg then that would be a bit of a boost and they are all I am expecting really.
We have Petrucci coming through so why would Fergie fork out for another expensive playmaker like Hamsik for example?

Change the game

Just give us the budget and realistic figures for individual players

Then it will feel more muppet-like

Right, I'm sorry but there's a game on, a pretty much must win game at OT.

And three people post in THIS thread whilst the match is on?

Do you even like football?
