well the best news of the closed season, was that big mighty phil neville may leave the team to get regular first team football. What are we going to do without phil (the rock) neville?

the worst news was that fergie gave him the number 3 shirt, so does that mean we keep him for a bit longer? pass the prozac love its going to be a long season...

hes no gary neville. he only wishes

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> i thought it was funny at least.

what gets me is people who start the 'get rid of phil neville' topics when its plain to see we have no options at the club to replace him at present.
feck off scouser

Didn't Phil hint in the summer that he'll be off if he doesn't get more first team matches this season?

You better play him or he'll leave..

;)

Everyone's happy then... ;)

How long's the other Neville out for?

Phil spoilt our first leg CL match, he seemed to be playing like a 2nd division player. Maybe he needs more 1st team experience or maybe he's just the (I don't want to say this...) cancer...

He's contributed a lot for Man Utd but he doesn't impress me anymore... sorry phil. :(

He never impressed me but in fairness you can't blame him for the Zala game. FFS, let's face it, we should beat them with 8 players on the pitch!

We can blame him for the goal we conceeded.

Beyond that, if we do sign Escude and when G Neville and Wes Brown are fit, PN will be in the reserves and hopefully will take the option of leaving for first team football elsewhere.

I think he said in an interview this week that he'd be back in 2 to 3 weeks.

P Neville is a great back up player.
Where else are we going to get such a loyal, versatile defender who will settle for a bit part role?
You need players like Neville in your squad.

Carroll wasnt really up for it yesterday at the first goal.

Versatile in that he can play LB or RB? Because he's appalling in midfield. At RB he has been crap in two out of the last three competative games.

Loyal. Well he reckons he's off if he doesn't get first team football. PN is blocking a stronger addition to our squad either from the youth ranks (Higginbotham moved on) or buying and up and coming FB.

Wrong. We need BETTER back-up players than phil neville.

Name another player who can play left & right back and will not kick up a fuss when hes not dropped.
You cant have 4 Roberto Carloses fighting for 2 full back places. Phil Neville is a decent player, how else would he have won so mnay England caps? he didnt play well @ Stamford bridge but he can do a lot better.

To be fair he hasn't played well yet this season.
But while he is in the team we need to be supporting him not cussing him all the time.
at least he is a 100 percenter and will always give his best.
SAF knows the score

Exactly, as i said a great back up player and im happy to see him playing 10-20 games for us, like what he did last season.

When Garyis back and Escude is on board that will be the case again. We don't have many options at the minute. All will be a lot better when Wes and Rio are back.
I quite fancy the 3-5-2 option with John, Rio and Lauren the 3

Gary you mean.
True, it'll push him further down the line and its up to him to do something about it which is good for Utd.
If he wasnt so versatiole and could only play rb he'd not be so usefull to have but versatile defenders are very important, especially on the subs bench.
Anyone along the back for gets injured, a fullback bring on Phil, a centreback, bring on Phil and move silvestre, Gazza or Brown etc into the middle. Without changing too much around in the middle of a game.

Escude? Finnan? ;)

But seriously we are not talking about getting carlos-class players here, phil neville looks out of his depth against better opposition and vouching for his ability due to his past england caps is just not on, he's not going to win too many now and the future is he judging by the performances he's putting in.

Clearly he's gone downhill since that infamous blunder against Romania in Euro 2000, his brother can't come back quickly enough.

Even if we get one of them well still need Phil Neville as back up. i doubt one would follow the other here if he thought first team starts were going to be rare.

We have
Brown,
Silvestre,
Phil
Gary

Bearing in mind that all but Phil will play a few games at centreback Phil Neville is still going to get a fair few games.
Who says escude is better btw, have you seen him play?

I personally haven't but some of us here who have watched rate him highly. Any comments Roy?

I am pretty sure that Finnan is DEFINITELY better.

Ste.
The reason people think you are a scouser is that to my memory you havn't had one good thing to say about united.

Finnan is better but would he be prepared to battle for a place with Gary, Silvestre, Wes & escude?
Until we can get a 5th choice versatile full back who is better than Phil Neville and can accept a rotation policy we have to stick with Phil. But its going to be very hard to find one.

I expect if we sign escude it will signal the end of Phil's time here. After that he will become the 3rd choice RB (behind Gary and Wes) and the 3rd choice LB (behind Micky and Escude). Gary won't play many games in CB this season as we already have Rio and O'Shea.

What would keano had done, if nev had gone and stuck one on him! i would have laughed my arse off, not on the pitch roy, should have done it behind looked doors. Yousee this is where the team need to be gelling not pushing each other!
