If, as expected, United sign Burdisso from Boca and Escude from Rennes, it will mean we will have our defence set up for years.

Both of them, Rio, JO'S, Micky, PNev, Wes would all be under 25, plus Gnev is only 26.

Once that is settled without the need to sign a play, it would mean that hopefully we can get a settled defence who understand each others play and can build good partnerships.

Thats if you new signing are successful..

Out of those you mention only Rio is top quality IMO...with O'Shea looking increasingly likely to join him

Micky and GNev are top class, and apparently so are the two coming in (if we get them).

Unlike Liverpool, we won't have to rebuild our defence in a few years once Hyppia, Handball and Babbell go.

Come on you tubby Yank.. ;)

No need to start trying to compare yourselves with us..who knows what will happen by the time the H's need replacing..

I'd say G Neville is a decent PL fullback, not top class tho and prone to dips in form/all the Mancs on here calling for his head..

Never been impressed by Silvestre overall....good going forward, not exactly sound defensively. Not a bad player but certainly not top class and one who annoy the feck out of me if I was a Manc ( God forbid)

No idea about your potential new signings...don't think its as easy as you make out tho, that if they arrive your defence is sorted for years..

You can't just go out and buy a new defence overnight and hope it works.
Buying a young defence would be dangerous. players who haven't played together before and are new to the Premier League, would take time to settle.
I can't see Liverpool being so lucky (of having such good judgement of players perhaps!) again in buying two central defenders who work well together from day one.
At United even Bruce and Pallister took time to gel.
Experience is vital in defence, and that's why it was so important that Blanc stayed on.
And anyway, United's defence has looked better than liverpool's so far this season. It's a lack of goals that is more concerning right now.
Two new, young defenders might just cause the defence to become even more unsettled.
There's not much wrong with Neville (G or P), Blanc Ferdinand and Silvestre. They just need to get a run of games together. It's consistency that matters.
You could see what happened to Liverpool in the past couple of weeks when Henchoz was out and they had to reshuffle - they weren't quite so solid were they?

Glad to see your visiting the General Forum as well Davo... <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

I have certainly made the assumption that the two players would be good. Fergie has a fairly good record on signing defenders - I can't think of too many duds in the last decade.

Micky has certainly improved a lot this year. I think in the next few years he will develop into a top player. Perhaps not world-class, but definately top class.

Saying that GNev cannot be classed as a top player because he has the odd occaisional dip in form (according to you anyway!), sorts of begs the question of does this make Michael Owen just a decent striker?.

Would you not say that one of Liverpool's main problems is that they lack decent cover in defence?. If one of the H's get injured your cover is not that good. Babbell could certainly do the job but I don't really think anyone knows how he will be once he gets back (plus he is over 30 already). Then you have Diao who played terribly against Bolton by all accounts (mainly those from Koptalk). Then you have Traroe who has never really impressed that much. After that there is Carragher whose central defensively liabailty was shown a few years ago before you got the H's.

I am saying they would fit in overnight, or that they would go straight into the first team, but the would certainly strengthen the squad and make out defensive unit strong.

They would have time to gel, due to the age of the squad and also the quality already there. Its not as if they would have to be thrown straight in at the deep end.

Gary Nev is 28. Same age as Becks. P Nev is 26.

We scored less and conceded less than the scousers.... It's just totally unimaginable . That tells you anything can happen in football ;)

I doubt we will sign both of them. Especially Burdisso, I think the club should have learnt from the signing Veron and Forlan and will become more careful in bringing in South Americans in the future. We may sign Escude, or no defender at all, because now we are more urgent to sign another attacker than a defender.

I think we should forget Burdisso al together, bring in Escude in January because LB is the only place we lack any cover, Bring in Mexes to replace Blanc and then the defence will be sorted out for the time being.

Rio and O'Shea look gr8 in the centre, Silvestre has improved a zillion percent on his early form and id rate him one of the top couple of fullbacks in England.

G Nev and Brown can fight it out for RB and P Nev can slot in whereva as required!
