Were absolute rubbish. In fact maybe they've been poor for longer but I'm just realizing this.

FIFA for all it's benefits in terms of licenses still has really flawed gameplay. They haven't quite grasped the concept of a player actually manipulating the ball. Dribbling in the game more than using genuine skill still centers largely around 'skill moves', which is sort of bizarre. There are also about 5 ways to score a goal in total.

PES on the other hand offers loads of possibilities but the game is just very 'clunky'. My player was receiving a pass yesterday. He's just about get it under control any minute now. I eagerly wait.

Also, Weaste can answer this question for me, is it so damn hard to make an AI that can keep challenging you, who you have to play really well to beat and anything less won't do?

I have Top Spin 4 and in the Grand Slams I always get a good game from the likes of Nadal and Federer. If I play well I should win, but it can go either way. If I don't play well I get walloped.

Rant over.

Agreed with the dribbling bit, Fifa's been shite in that regard since Fifa 99/98.

I'm with amol.

I just read the FIFA12 thread and that doesn't sound encouraging either. FIFA11 is barely a step forwards from the old megadrive game where you just ran up the wing and booted the ball in from a certain spot. The players are all indentical in character, the teams are all identical in character, each game is identical in how it pans out, what you do when you get the ball, etc. It's disgracefully bad for a supposed "next gen" market leader.

It's also riddled with ridiculous bugs. For example, I changed United's line up/formation, and now whenever I try to use them, half of the line up will have mysteriously become unnamed goalkeepers or Nemanja Vidic...If I try and sort it out, the player names/numbers screw up completely and the game freezes. I also scored a dipping half volley with Rooney from a tight angle, and saved the replay...except when I went to watch the replay back it was just a clip of him celebrating. Why?

PES has the idea right with player and team individuality/style, and teams reacting tactically to the situation or their opponent. The Master League is also great, but the gameplay is so robotic and sluggish, and clumsy. For example, when your entire team stands about five yards offside for no reason, or when you make the mistake of trying to turn round whilst in possession of the ball...or when the ball gets passed between your two centrebacks who just stand there while the CPU refuses to let you take control of either of them. Again, why?

You could just about scrape a decent game out of it if you combined the good parts of the two together.

I've actually been a little deluded with optimism in recent times with regards to FIFA games but I've found some perspective now.

They're both rubbish.

Do you like tennis? Have you played Top Spin 4?

I think PES holds the most hope.

The majority, including EA, seem to think FIFA is close to perfection so the chances of them changing the dribbling system are none.

PES on the other hand is second best so they have to keep making big moves.

This is one big negative of online gaming. It's growing popularity over the last few years has given game developers particularly of sports games that have a new edition every year an excuse to do lesser with the gameplay.
