Barcelona Head Coach Carles Rexach was full of praise for the Liverpool supporters after seeing his side applauded off the Anfield pitch at the end of the game.

Rexach said: "In world football Liverpool fans have a great reputation for their sporting nature. They are very knowledgeable about the game and it was nice to be applauded off the pitch after their team had lost 3-1."

The Barcelona coach was delighted with his side's showing but acknowledged the miss by Michael Owen at the start of the second half as a real turning point.

Rexach said: "Early in the second half at 1-1 Michael Owen put one just past the post. If that had gone in it could have changed things.

"We really needed a big win and this has shown everyone that we are capable of winning against a side like Liverpool which gives us confidence for the rest of the season.

"Fortune favoured us and it is a very important victory against a great European side like Liverpool and it's a great night for us. Tonight we gave a performance worthy of gaining a huge amount of respect on the European stage.

"Liverpool are a team that press you all the time so we worked on a plan to counter that. We moved the ball around very well and in the last 20 minutes it worked very well.

"They like to play on the counter attack but as soon as we went 2-1 up they had to change their game and we played very well."

Oi Foul as a Dog Turd, why the feck would we watch your pile of shite team play anyway? We were all busy watching United unluckily draw with the reigning European Champions, which I'm sure everyone will agree is better than watching the reigning UEFA cup champions get thrashed at home by the reigning......er....the reigning nothing.

Niiiice.

I only asked, Daniel, because all your manky mates seem to know so much about our game without having seen it.

Foul as a dog turd, in their defence though I would suggest that they are probably all right though. You're scouse brethren will not make it out of that group IMO and playing the boring antifootball that you do will have been a major factor why.

Danny boy, do you think we played boring football last night then?

and by the way, even the Barca coach said it was close, and a couple of missed chances by us swung the game.

We were mate, we were well on top in the first half and for the first 10-15 minutes of the second.... game changed when Owen missed his second chance.

They applauded because they'd finally seen some good footy at Anfield.

<a href="http://www.onefootball.com/index.phtml?page=fullstory&newsid=97824" target="_blank">Rexach demands respect for Anfield conquerors
</a>
Wednesday 21st November 2001

Charly Rexach believes Barcelona showed their true colours in Tuesday's 3-1 Champions' League win over Liverpool.
"I'm sure from now on we'll be more respected in Europe," said the coach.

Barca have flattered to deceive in European competition in recent seasons. Last term, the Catalans failed to progress past the Champions' League group phase and fell to Liverpool in the semi-final of the Uefa Cup.

But the Liga side overcame an early Michael Owen goal to dismantle Liverpool at Anfield with strikes from Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochemback and Marc Overmars.

"We're not surprised," said Rexach. "We've played at a very high level before this season, sometimes in the Champions' League.
But before it has only been for one hour or for only half a game. Against Liverpool we played well for the entire game.

"We knew that Liverpool are a well-armed, aggressive team with a strong defence and that we had to keep and move the ball quickly if we were to beat them. We certainly managed to do that very well in the second half and they became more and more desperate and left us more space.

"We started the game badly, but when Owen scored we suddenly came out of our shells and lifted our game considerably."

But the Barca chief kept his feet on the ground. "I've spent all my life in football and I know that this is win is only a step that we have taken. I'm a lot less euphoric than the public will be. But when things are going badly for us, I'm a lot less pessimistic than the fans.

One of Barca's outstanding players, Xavi Hernandez, thanked the Liverpool fans for applauding the Nou Campers after the final whistle.

"The English are always very accurate in their valuations and every player was delighted that they gave us an ovation at the end. We dominated for so much of the game, particularly in the second half and I was delighted with the overall performance. We played some deluxe football.

"The ball moved around very quickly and we made the most of it. In the past we have done this, but there has been no end result."

Barca's second goal scorer, the Brazilian Rochemback, was equally delighted. "This was, without doubt, the most important match of my life," he explained. "We really needed to win and the way we did it was unbelievable."

Well, in <a href="http://www.diarioas.es" target="_blank">AS</a> he does say:

"We have had many other triumphs of the highest quality in the Champions League, against Bayer Leverkusen and Olympic Lyon, but this time we played well for the whole 90 minutes. At the very least it will ensure that in Europe the other teams will have more respect for us."

Great to see that he rates Liverpool in the same class as Leverkusen and Lyon - the top of the tree <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Oi bindipper, I watched the game and it was a typical Poo performance. Boring boring Liverpool.
I think credit is due to Barca who have started the Liverpoo downfall. You guys were never gonna do anything with a team that comprises of McCallister, Henchoz and Carragher as star players.
feckwits !

CMON UNITED !

You fought well for an hour (with emphasis on fought. It wasn't excactly a free flowing game) , but you can't get away from the fact you were outplayed for the last half our.

Interesting to see that you think you can be 'magnificent', and still lose deservedly by a solid margin at your own place... ;)

59 fecking passes, and a scouse never got near the ball, until it ended up in the net. Now that is taking the piss BIG TIME.
