The England cricket team...

Think we have a great chance this year. Lots of things going for us and Australia have very much been on the back foot.

We'll manage to feck it up somehow though. So I wholly expect a 3-1 to the Aussies.

The Australian team is under-rated. If their first 11 is fit, I'd back them to win this 3-1.

Katich, Watson, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, North, Haddin, Hauritz, Johnson, Bollinger, Hilfenhaus

Unfortunately for them, Katich's going to be playing with a broken thumb and Bollinger's still not 100%.

Spin is the only weakness in the side, it's a top quality team otherwise. Not as good as the previous Aussie ones, obviously, but still very good.

If England keep everyone fit, I think they'll take the series. Swann is the obvious difference between the sides.

If Katich or Bollinger can't get over their injuries I'd love to see Hughes/Khawaja back in as well as Siddle.

My most miserable sporting 'moment' was watching virtually all of the last Australian Ashes series. I missed the odd after tea session due to time difference, but I watched virtually all of it otherwise. It wasn't just the dismal thrashing, it was the hope... we actually played well and looked on top on quite a number of occasions... it's always the hope that kills you

And then some big eared cnut comes and does this to you.

Watson sends out Ashes warnings

Peter English
October 30, 2010

Shane Watson believes Stuart Broad is the biggest fast-bowling threat during the Ashes but expects James Anderson and Steven Finn to struggle in Australian conditions. While the three men starred during the 3-1 home win over Pakistan, Watson has told them it will be a different game Down Under.

Watson, who has grown into one of Australia's key men, said Broad had the skills to adapt to the harder, flatter surfaces during the five Tests, but he is not convinced by the credentials of the other two members of England's first-choice attack. When asked by ESPNcricinfo if he thought Anderson and Finn would struggle he said: "I do. It's obviously a very challenging place to come out and play and it's very different to England with the way the ball swings all day.

"That's why Jimmy Anderson is so skilful when the ball is swinging. When the ball is not swinging it makes it easier to bat." Watson is looking forward to the period when the Kookaburra loses its shine and there is less risk in driving through the off-side.

When Anderson was in Australia four years ago he took five wickets at 82.6 while Finn, the 21-year-old, will be on Ashes debut. "There's no doubt it's a really big challenge for Anderson," Watson said. "There's no doubt he'll have some mental scars from the last series he played out here. But he'll be trying to find a way to be more successful."

Watson also offered a warning for Finn, who has stormed to 32 wickets in his first eight Tests. "It's something very new to him," he said. "The ball won't be moving around here anywhere as near as much as it did in England, so it's going to be a really big challenge."

The home side has won the Ashes in the past four series and Watson is convinced Australia will be more comfortable than they were in 2009. "It is different to England, no doubt about that," he said. "It's going to take the English quite a while to be able to adapt and find ways of being successful over here, that's our big advantage."

Watson has excelled at Test level since returning to the side during last year's Ashes defeat, so his opinions are gaining weight. He is unsure whether England's seamers will focus on a fuller length in the hope of achieving any available swing, or operate more in line with the Australian method of bowling shorter and pushing the batsmen back.

He felt Broad was the only England fast man who could fulfil both roles. "Stuart Broad is a very skilful bowler," he said. "He will be their main man out here. He's got the skills to adapt to different conditions, and got the height to make the most out of his bounce. I really think he's going to be their main man. If we're able to negate him that will be a big plus."

England arrived in Perth on Saturday afternoon ahead of three first-class tour matches. Their opening game is against Western Australia from Friday while they also face South Australia and Australia A before heading to the Gabba for November 25.

I agree with Watto about Broad and Anderson, but from what I hear about Finn I doubt he'll find it difficult in Australian conditions given his pace and bounce.

I think Anderson will struggle the most. Broad will be effective, but it will be interesting if he can keep his cool with the Aussies trying to wind him up at every attempt. I would've thought Finn's size and bowling style would suit the Australian conditions.

As for the Aussie attack, I assume Johnson, Hauritz and Dougie (if fit) will be there, but what about the other seamer? If Siddle's fit I'd play him, he looked a good aggressive bowler, but I haven't seen him play in a long time and he has been injured.

Hilfenhaus. End of story. If Dougie can't get fit, it'll be Ryan Harris (fitness permitting) or after that Clint McKay. Would like to see Steve Smith given a chance at some point, perhaps for North.

Completely forgot about the Hilf!! Yeah, in that case it'll be Hilfenhaus, Johnson, Dougie & Hauritz - an effective attack, but a far cry from the last Ashes series in Australia of McGrath, Warne, Lee & Clark.

Clint McKay's an intelligent limited overs bowler, but I don't think he's cut out for tests. I would pick Siddle over both him and Ryan Harris. Although, I'm not sure how good Siddle is right now after his 8 month layoff.

Siddle's looking pretty good in Shield cricket, but he's been slightly eclipsed by a more in form Darren Pattinson who took 8 for and 9 for the match at the WACA against Western Australia. If he's required he'll be ready for test cricket I'd imagine.

Is this the same Pattinson who played a test match for England a few years back?

I think he got the names wrong. Darren Pattinson is the guy who played for England. James is his younger brother. I vaguely remember reading that he took a 8 for in a recent domestic match.

Ok, that would be less controversial. Plus, D. Pattinson hardly looked a test match player.

Anderson has got a lot better though at not being hugely expensive when it's not swinging, which will be important

But ultimately for me, his series is getting an opener out and then getting Ponting at the crease when the new ball is still moving, as he's always an LBW candidate early in his innings

Impossible to call, both teams seem so average..

South Africa India is the biggest series this winter.

It was DJ Pattinson, the one who has played a test for England, who is looking decent in two Shield games this season. Here's the scorecard of Victoria vs Western Australia where he took 8/35 in the first innings.

His younger, Australian brother, JL Pattinson, who was named in the Australian one day squad against India, was replaced on that tour due to injury and hasn't played any cricket since then.

I mention Darren with a pinch of salt; he has experience on Australian pitches as well as having faced most of the Australians in domestic cricket before but I doubt he's Ashes (or international) quality.

It's going to be a let-down with the scheduling being a complete farce. We play NZ at home on December 10th in the 5th ODI of a series and start the test series against SA on December 16th. Ridiculous planning.

Oh, OK.

I hope we hammer them but as is the thing with us we've gone out there mouthing off how we're going humiliate them and doing that in Australia means we'll probably ending up throwing away a dead cert winnable early test match and then collapse completely

We ought to shut the fk up and focus on every match and do the talking at the crease not in the TV Radio studio

Didn't we officially beat all cricket fans to death not too long ago?

Surely that means there's no point in the ashes even taking place

I watched all the tests that Finn played against Bangladesh and he didn't neccessasrily look like the type of hit-the-deck-hard fast bowler that everyone seems to be expecting him to be because of his height. He's more of a swing bowler IMO, although at 6'8, I'm sure he won't have much trouble making the transformation eventually.

I don't rate Broad much but there's been a couple of matches where he's looked unplayable when he's found his rhythm. This might be the series that launches him as a world class bowler. Or he might just get tonked, feck knows.

A lot of the Aussies I know - the ones who are actually cricket fans, seem to think they might get turned over, but I think the Aussies will take this one.

Can we not ban all cricket talk?

I don't have to open the cricket threads, and to be honest, I rarely notice them. But I don't like the thought of Caftards deriving pleasure from talking about fecking cricket. I mean, cricket!? Really??

If you want to talk about something desperately shit that much, there's a thread in the United Forum about Park's new haircut.

Cricket.

I'm going to the Melbourne test :)

I'm not sure where this England are shite is coming from.

We'll beat the Aussies 2-1 and have no worries turning over india next summer.

Good stuff.

So wtf are you opening the thread for and even worse, why waste your time posting 4 paragraphs on the topic?

Oh, OK.

Is SA vs India being played in SA? zing, what do you mean by the scheduling? That would be a bit of cock up by the BCCI.

It's in South Africa, yes. And I already said it.. our players are playing 3 tests, followed by 5 ODIs against New Zealand which end on December 10th. On December 16th, the first test starts against SA. No warm-up matches.

Last week they decided that some players part of the test team and not playing the ODI series vs NZ will fly out to SA early to get match preparation -- this will probably mean Sachin, Laxman, Dravid and maybe Dhoni.. but really, the situation shouldn't exist in the first place.
