The Dream is Over

Man Utd's title race is all but over. Only Arsenal self-destructing and Liverpool screwing up along with a brilliant Man Utd winning streak can see them win it now. Why? Because they lost to Middlesborough.
How the hell do they loose to a team like that?
The Bocsic goal was well taken, but the back-line was a shambles. The only defender Man Utd have who still remembers how to defend is Ronny Johnson, and he is a walking injury. Veron screwed up, and then demonstrated about as much charactor as a schoolgirl. Does anyone remember how Roy Keane played after scoring that own goal against Real Madrid in the CL 2 years ago? He was like a man posessed. He was the only player on the pitch to rival the superb Redondo. If Man Utd had rescued that game, it would have been down to one man's efforts. But they couldn't. Not against a Real Madrid team that good, and on that form. But Middlesborough aren't Real Madrid. They barely rival Athletico Madrid. They are, in a word, crap. But Man Utdf can't score even once in 83 minutes against them? Because without Roy Keane, who was injured, Man Utd have about as much spine and determination as Roma showed against Liverpool last week. None. Champions? Not unless they can find a couple of new Roy Keanes.

hmmm that's the spirit!!
whip out the old wallet should they? worked last summer! <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

Whip out the wallet? Yes and no. As Veron (and most of Italian football) proves, indescriminate spending gets you nowhere. Keane cost a lot of money at the time, but he was the type of player that Man Utd could build a real team around. And their performance in his absence proves that. Man Utd needs skillful players yes, but it needs players who will run themselves into the ground before loosing. And though they are hard to find, they're well worth it. Would this team have won so much without the only one Fergie's found so far?

I can't remember...how much did we pay for Keane originally?

Keane originally cost about £3.5 million. I think it wa a record fee for a British-based player or something like that. Still, £3.5million? Bargain.

Errr it was a record buy and still a bargain? You can't judge these things on modern inflated prices but against the prices of the day.
